View from the Monument
Pretty picture of the US Capitol from top of the Washington Monument. I used to live in DC but moved away several years ago. I miss it. Had a business meeting in town and had exactly 3 hours to go see some sites because the rest of the time was booked. I had seen all the monuments before several times over but it was a day a little on the cool side for DCers so I was hoping there'd be no one at the monuments which would make for great picture taking. I was right! Perfect day for pictures, clear sky and hardly any people. Only negative was that the trees weren't in bloom and there was some brown grass here and there but it's so rare to get photos with no people in them!
Plus, as part of my nephew's class project, I had to take "Flat Stanley" (a little cut out of a kid tastefully drawn by my 8 year old nephew) to the monuments and take pictures with him in them and then summarize the significance. I had to make sure my nephew's project was unique so was determined to get ole Stanley in as many pictures as possible!
I was staying in a hotel about 4 blocks
FDR Memorial
One of the larger falls at the FDR Memorial. from the White House so started there. Zipped over and snapped a couple photos of the Pennsylvania side. Luckily, the President did not come out to say "Hi" 😊 Then, I headed down to the Mall. Took some pictures of the Washington Monument and for all my years in DC I don't ever recall going to the top! So...decided to do that. Since no one was around, I was able to walk right up and in without getting a ticket. Took the 70 second elevator ride to the top and got some great pictures of the Capitol side. The Jefferson/Lincoln side was not as good for picture taking. The sun was on that side which really emphasized the dirty windows. Going to the top of the Monument is a must to see so clearly how DC was laid out and planned. Love my old home.
Didn't have a lot of time so headed back down and made my way over the World War II Memorial which is one of my faves. There were about 5 total people at the Memorial and all the water was still running. Very, very pretty. So calming and respectful at the same time.
Washington Monument
Love the clear, blue sky behind the Monument. Was a windy day so the flags were flying. Cruised over to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial and Women's Memorial via the Tidal Basin but didn't have time to get too close. As I said, I've toured all these before with lots more time to spend on them so today was just about taking pictures. Met some friendly DC squirrels along the way. Those things are so tame they could be pets if you like rodents for pets.
Walked over to the Lincoln Memorial and got some good pictures of the Washington Monument reflection. Sun was beginning to go down a bit and I was running out of time! Cruised over to the Korean Memorial and snapped a couple quick pictures and then decided to go for it and try for FDR and Jefferson. One of my favorite walks in DC (when I have time to do it leisurely). There was only one other person at the FDR Memorial. The Memorial is probably my favorite Memorial/Monument in the DC National Mall area. Love all the water in the Memorial and work of FDR in regard to civil rights. The Memorial is quite different from the others which makes it unique as well.
The sun was definitely setting so
Washington Monument at Sunset
Orange glow on the Monument as the sun starts to set... only had a short time to make it to Jefferson if I was going to do it! Snapped a few pictures of the Jefferson Memorial with the pink glow of the setting sun on it. The Jefferson Memorial is also a favorite of mine due to its dome architecture in honor of Jefferson's work.
By this time, the sun was really setting so able to snap a nice pic of the Monument in the sun's orange glow. Then, hailed a cab (no time to walk back) to make my evening events! Whew!
I had a number of pictures from today turn out really well so was hard to narrow down to a few to post! We went to a Washington Capitals game tonight (love hockey) and was happy to have the Capitals win! It was a high scoring game.
Tomorrow, I hope to get a couple pictures of Stanley and the US Capitol in between meetings and then it'll be heading back home.
