Dear me!
Look what walked down the road. Geo: 37.1852, -122.23
I didn't know what to expect using Airbnb for the first time
and was a little apprehensive. However, that was short-lived as Alex and I were
very pleased by our accommodations. While we shared a bathroom with other
rooms, it was very clean and quiet. There was a common area as well as a
kitchen. Complimentary coffee and fruit was provided by the owner Vienna. It was very much like an adult style hostel.
Alex awoke and we were soon off to have a nice breakfast before heading out to
our first vacation destination, Big Basin Redwoods State Park. We drove through
a quaint historic town following breakfast and headed out of San Fran. My plan
was to get close to our camp then go shopping at a nearby Walmart or comparable
discount grocer. Surprisingly, we quickly left the city scene and were out in
the country before we knew it. Now, camping in the Redwood forest was Alex's
idea which I was happy to oblige. The added bonus for him was the extremely
windy roads which he declared his favorite he has been on. The landscape
quickly changed as we closed in on the State Park and everything seemed to
multiply in size from what you would normally see around you. The
trees were
larger than normal, but not monstrous, until… we entered the forest. As we
approached the Park entrance, Alex and I stared in amazement at the shear
enormity of the trees around us. I will say now, if you have not witnessed
first- hand this wonder of nature, you really need to make it a priority. For
these are the Sequoia to the Native American or in Latin Steroidius
Humungo Arborus and translated in English as, Trees on Steroids.
Really, these were coastal Redwoods, the largest trees on
the planet. Over 300 feet tall with some having a circumference of over 60 feet
at the base, they live more than 2000 years. What beauty awaited us. We quickly
determined there is a little town about 15 minutes' drive, for the self-proclaimed
local lead foot, where we could purchase our camp provisions. Not to bore you
with details of the errand run, I will mention a moment I did not expect. My
copilot, ever on watch on these windy roads for hidden dangers, gave a belt out
that froze my brain momentarily. I hear, uhhhhhhh Peeeeeaaaacockkkk as he points
out the window. Huh??? I was just able to gain comprehension of his words in
time to witness a black peacock standing on the side of the
road, seemingly
offended we were passing by as he just pulled his head back without a movement
of his body and shot us a look of disgust.
Now at our camp, we quickly set up amongst the giants. A quick lunch, some afternoon relaxation,
then off on a hike to see some of the largest trees in the State. What an awe
inspiring first day.
Did I mention, we left 90+ degree weather and traded it for
75 high-50 lows? Sweat my friends and
loved ones, while we lavish in the comfort of the great outdoors.
