Thursday 16th September - Eureka - Humbolt County Border = 90 miles.
Our longest ride ever. We couldn't quite make 100 miles, infact we couldn't make another 100 yards.
Friday 17th September - Humbolt County Border - Fort Bragg = 66 miles.
Another days good
cycling even though I had a mini-breakdown at the end of it! It goes something like this.....1. Woke up with Vincent eyes (the beast from beauty and the beast).
2. Cycled past the last grocery store for 28 miles before our ascent of the notorious Legget Hill. Had to do a detour climb one mile uphill to the grocery store.
3. Cycled 30 miles from inland to the coast. Thick fog and rain.
4. Sitting in a windwept cafe at the remotest part of Northern California (think Outer Hebrides) counting the mosquito/midgie/flying black spidery bites on my body. 11 on the left leg, 3 on the right leg, one on my neck, one on my eyebrow, one on my chin.
5. Got to the campsite to be told the showers weren't working. We had to walk 10 mins for a shower.
6. Got to the showers. They took 2 x quarters each = 4 quarters. Emptied our pockets. We had 1.
7. Couldn't face cooking on the stove so decided to go to the lovely mexican restaurant we'd passed outside the campsite. When we walked in I said to David how lovely the food looked and smelled. Then I
noticed a sign "NO CARDS ACCEPTED". Emptied our pockets (again). $11.8. Walked up to the only grocery store in town for cashback. All 6 cards declined. No dinner for us.
9. Campsite crawling with flying red ant things.
10. Just about to go to sleep and David finds a flying red ant thing crawling on him. He tries (for my sake) to quietly brush it out of the tent! It doesn't work..
11. BREAKDOWN! "I want to go home. I'm not a traveller. I like white sheets. I like clean bathrooms. I don't want to wear flip flops in the shower. I want to wear make up and high heels and my little black dress. I want to drink wine and eat olives and shop at Waitrose. I WANT TO GO HOME'............

SLOW DOWN!
You are doing too much!...you both need to chill and take your time. Don't think of it as an endurance test....your in a beautiful part of the world, take your time and have a look around, stay in a nice hotel for the night, rent a car for the day,go to the movies,go to an art gallery, get pissed!......don't spoil it for yourselfs by over doing it. Phone Trish and John when you get to Orange County and take a break. This is the easy bit!....wait till you get to Central America...your gonna need to feel refreshed and ready for it. Do some sightseeing in Frisco for a few days and recharge your batteries Take care of each other Love Jeanette,Paul,Jamie XXX
