Trees of Mystery at Klamath, California
20th June, 2009 Travel to Redding, California.

Crossed back into California this morning, left Gold Beach at around 8.15am, down through Brookings and a short time later we crossed into California, stopped by Homeland security at the Border, they were checking for Advocado's, Citris and plants, of course we had none.
Ten mile further on we started to get into the Coastal Redwoods, these are some of the tallest trees in the world standing at 200 - 300 ft tall, bases are pretty damn big too. They are on the side of the road so no shortage of trees to view.
We stopped at the "Trees of Mystery" at Klamath on US 101 (40 miles south of the Oregon Border), went for a walk through the Redwoods, amazing trees, they shouldn't be standing as they don't have a tap root, so roots are very shallow, and supporting a trunk 300 ft tall is no mean feet. Have a look at the photo's but they don't do the tree's justice. They also have a "Sky Trail" (Gondola) which takes you up to a ridge where you can look back over the Pacific Ocean and back over the Redwood forests.

Describes the following two photo's
the coast to Arcata where we headed off east, plan was to stay in Willow Creek for the night, but after sampling lunch we decided it was to close to "Deliverance" for us (the film). Up and over the Coast Ranges, through Weaverville, Whiskytown and into Redding where we were greeted with a thunderstorm, had followed a valley out through the hills, very nice and a lot of rafters enjoying the river.
Walk after dinner and attacked by two dogs, never mind, one will eat only on one side of his mouth for a long time. And to all you dog lovers - dogs should be kept under control.
One thing we have noticed over here is that there are a lot of dogs around, they are first class citizens, have seen them in restaurants, shops, up on the Sky Trail today and everywhere else you can imagine. There are some really good owners and then those that can't even pick up after their dogs.
