a post secript from Sanfrancisco
This is a sweetshop especially for georgie, jess, Miles, ruben and Alex! Well we finally left San Francisco a day later than planned after a bit of a health scare from Mr Winch . Thankfully he seems fine and Lucy found her way out of the city and in the right direction for the Rockies and the Sierra nevada.. She and I shared the driving and after what seemed a rather tortuous route going east, south, north, and east again, through the bread basket region of california, we did arrive at the south gate of Yosemite National Park and our beautiful Lodge.. We had to acquire snow chains as it is law to have them in this part of the world. The forecast for the next few days was snow!!!. It grew steadily colder as we ventured higher into the hills and snow began to appear all around us. Ofcourse I had missed it all back home so it was a bit of a shock.
The lodge is set in wonderful surroundings on the edge of this huge wilderness. We only had two nights here so took a guided tour to ensure we saw all that we could. . There were only five of us on the tour which was good and
our ranger/guide Ralf was great though he talked for England or rather for all of the states of the USA! Unfortunately the weather was not good the snow turned to rain and the very low clouds hung menacingly close to all we wanted to see. Going to Yosemite in Winter means that some of the trails sights and roads are closed because of the snow and Lucy was sorely disappointed that we couldnt get to see the wonderfful giant sequoias trees. Yosemite is world famous and was the first national park in the US established in 1890 by Congress, and indeed set the ball rolling for the rest of the world in terms of protecting the precious land in which we live. It is 1169 squrare miles of parkland wilderness and is most known for its glacial valley encased in sheer granite rocks rising to over 5000 feet. The view known as tunnel view which you see as you come out of the mile long granite tunnel is supposed to be the most photographed view in the world , but then a number of the spectacular places I have been to , they also say that!!!
As I say
we couldn’t see much so that was a real shame we hoped the weather would clear a bit during the day as we would be coming back that way but it didn’t . So I feel a trifle let down but what can you do, weather is weather as Al says!!!
Tomorrow we leave and make our way to Las vegas, not sure that we can do it in one day its abount 470 miles. We often get lost in the towns we have to pass through and that adds to the time, so we shall see. . The glitter , noise and warmth of that town will be interesting and we have been told we have to bet on number 34 red, a little chinese gentleman implored us to do it - so we shall!
lots of love
