Up at 5:15 AM and tired, we took a smooth and speedy taxi trip to the airport. With no traffic, we got there in plenty of time to navigate the airport process in our foggy state. Now on the plane home, as we chase the sun around the planet, after 20 hours of traveling, we should arrive in SF 10 hours after we left Athens. Everyone had fun and had some great experiences, but we are all excited about going home and sleeping in on Sunday! It is worth cataloging a few things about this year’s adventures: The replaceable things we traded for irreplaceable memories: Andrew lost his first pair of sunglasses somewhere in the hedge maze at Hampton Court. A replacement pair acquired at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul was broken somewhere in Crete due ... read more

By Melisse. What do you do when you need a tool you don’t happen to have? You may look to buy one or borrow one or just make do with what you have on hand. Or you may get inventive if you can’t find exactly what you need; if it just isn’t made, is no where to be found...you just might make one. Last week we visited a friend, John Lyddon, who I hadn’t seen or spoken to since the summer of 1979. We met in Sewall Hall, our freshman dorm at University of Colorado. Shortly after he graduated from college in ‘75 he bought and became steward of a gorgeous spread of land south of San Fransisco, overlooking the rolling hills that wonder into the gleaming Pacific Ocean. Since I visited him there in ’79 ... read more

Departure day! Sad that the trip is over, but I think we’re all ready to go home. They needed to clean our flat for the incoming guests, so we packed up early (leaving our luggage) and went out for breakfast. Had some nice pastries in a French bakery (not as good as the ones that were in Paris, but still pretty good). Went on a brief hunt for magazines and were amused to find that they don’t seem to sell magazines in drug stores or book stores in London. We did eventually find a news stand by a tube station, but not an extensive selection. We moved on, confident there would be plenty of time and selection at Heathrow. Stopped by an intereresting sidewalk market on the way home where they were selling a wide variety ... read more

Departure day! We figured that we wanted the kids to be ready to sleep on the plane, so we got them up a bit early this morning. We walked to downtown San Mateo with the dog to get bagels. Lauren was very choked up about leaving the dog for two weeks. She suggested she might call him and was shocked to hear that some people actually do call their pets while on vacation. Kids to camp for the day. Dog seemed happy as could be left with friends in SF who agreed to care for him. Just a few loose ends to tie up… until… around 1:30 Andrew’s camp calls to tell us there has been an incident… On the phone they made it sound like no big deal. When Sonia arrived at camp, Andrew was ... read more

Someone suggested a travel blog. So here we are, trying to figure out how to do this so that we are experts by the time we hit the ground in Europe. We leave in Three Days! The kids are excited. We're down to planning minutia. The dog knows something is up and is hoping it won't go badly for him. It will.... read more

Aqua is the volcano that looms over Antigua. It is majestic. The little city under it so reminded me of Tahoe City in the 1960's and 70's. Friendly people. Small, independent business. Delicious food. Visitors welcome and needed. Antigua for me was both new and familiar. I’ve been back in San Mateo for a week now. Returning to my house feels like taking off tight, pointy, high-heeled dress shoes after a long, family wedding. Relief. San Mateo is different than Antigua. The shower has hot water and strong pressure. My bed is soft. I relish sinking into it. All the cars look new, even mine. People wear their seatbelts. Buses spew oxygen and not diesel dirt. Grocery stores are in business districts and homes are in neighborhoods. The dogs are well-fed. In fact, my dog Toby ... read more

The attacker struck me from behind. Startled and stunned my breath left me. Three quick blows to the head and shoulders. Then nothing. Quiet. I felt no pain. I blushed when I realized I was standing in my tiny bedroom closet and the shoes I had just thrown up to the highest, bulging shelf had fallen back down and pummeled me on the head as I turned to leave. Dangerous shoes were my assailant. My house is small by Bay Area standards. I like it that way. Less to take care of. But sometimes small means no place to store things. So I stuff. Literally. And then my closets attack me. Stuff. That’s my current issue. How much stuff will I need for 8 weeks? Will I bring the “right stuff”? How in the heck will ... read more

Last October My ex-neighbor asked me what I had been doing recently. “Wandering around aimlessly”, I quipped. She look startled. Then disgusted. She never did think I gave her straight answers. Yet that is exactly what I have been doing for the last year when Luke, my 16 year-old son, I raised alone for 12 years, moved in with his Dad. Wandering, wailing at my empty nest, wondering what I should do next, that’s what I did with a lot of my time. I told her the truth. Oh, I look busy. I’ve been playing at being an independent corporate trainer. I love it when I’m working, but that’s only been about 40% of the time. The idea was to use my investment portfolio to keep things going until it really got off the ground. Then ... read more
