The long and winding Pacific Highway 1
July 1st continued

Left San Francisco - I hope it won't be another 39 years before I'm back!

Found the freeway pretty easily and drove about 1 1/2 hours where we stopped in Gilroy the City of Garlic for some groceries among other things. We had decided to take the 101 some of the way because we would have too long a drive otherwise. Went towards the coast so we ended up around Monterey Bay and from there on we had a beautiful ride along the Pacific on Highway 1. It was a long ride because of 'The long and winding road" and we weren't in Pismo Beach until nine. But we were pleased that we had decided to go the extra miles as we know had accommodation directly at the Pacific and a balcony overlooking the ocean.

Checked in and fetched some dinner at the local restaurant Marie Callender. Went to bed.

July 2nd

Woke up to a beautiful, not too warm day. Breakfast was included which was nice as we didn't have to spend time searching for a store and the children could jump in the pool directly after breakfast while Tine was still

finishing her coffee. The hotel garden and pool were situated facing the ocean but even though there was a nice, fresh breeze coming in from the sea the pool area was protected against the wind making it pleasant to be there.

Paul went shopping in Walmart buying all kind of necessary and as it turned out perhaps not so necesssary things. There was another Danish family at the pool and the women very much wanted to talk so Tine had a long chat with her. They had spend 3 days in Vegas. Well we only have a night there driving through. Had a really nice morning at the pool and Paul came back after 3 hours of shopping? in Walmart? But he had enjoyed himself. The reason for his delay was partly caused by the Walmart cashier who wanted to check out the Michael Jackson greatest hits cd content, which Paul wanted to buy because of the breaking news about his unfortunate death.

Tine, Eskil and Paul went into 'town' for some lunch and we of course had to try some of the local specialties - clams. There were, however, more crust than clams we found. Brought fish

and chips back to Freja who had enjoyed a 'time out' without the family. Eskil and Tine walked along the beach home. Beautiful beach and the water was rather shallow and calm even though a couple of surfers still had a go at it. Found some strange seaweed about 3 m long and watched the pelikans circling above our heads. In the last shop before the pier they had some real delicacies: crickets, scorpions and worms covered in white and brown chocolate and you could also get them in vinegar and salt, covered in peanut butter and some last thing I can't remember - 25 cents a piece but neither of us felt the urge.

Spend some time at the pool area again but we had of course all had a bit too much sun! Not bad, but it was time to stop.

Went into town for dinner at the same place - other choice of food and went home and packed.

July 3rd

Had breakfast and got ready to leave. Sold a paperback to the Danish women - they were leaving today or rather in the middle of the night and were very envious that

we still had a long time before going home. Took off but made a short bread at an outlet center where Tine got a pair of LEVIS for 160,- DKK. very cheap.

Beach!
So glad the weather along the central coast cooperated for your visit there. It can be overcast in the summer, if hot inland. Enjoy your journey together! Love, Karen

hi karen, yes we've been really lucky with the weather until now, but it's a bit too hot for us here around MOab and Mesa Verde too, I expect. Do you remember the address where we all lived in Riverside? Tine

I, Too, Love the coastal route
Hello again, fearless travelers, Your photos and commentaries are such fun. It's a long time since Galal and I were on that beautiful coastal run from San Franciso to Pismo. Did you take the time to tour the Hearst Castle? I'm a native Californian but I always turned up my nose at such a tourist attraction. Well, I finally broke down and we went through it about five years ago. It was fascinating. I'm eager for your next adventure. By the way, on Saturday, the 11th, I adopted a rescued Maine Coon cat. He's about two years old and we love him so much. He's not quite as big as Eskil's, but he's still young. love, mel
