Official La Cocina:
La Cocina is a ground-breaking business incubator designed to reduce the obstacles that often prevent low-income food entrepreneurs from creating successful and sustainable small businesses. By providing affordable, shared, commercial kitchen space, an array of industry-specific technical assistance and services, and access to market opportunities and access to capita, La Cocina works with entrepreneurs as they launch, grow, and formalize successful food businesses. We focus primarily on women from culturally diverse communities and immigrant communities. Our vision is that our program participants will become economically self-sufficient and contribute to a vibrant and diverse economy doing what they love to do. I first attended La Cocina a few years ago (2011). It is just an easy trip on BART, get off in the Mission, and scope out the many choices for eating and drinking. This might be the last year of La Cocina as we know it. What a shame. The Mission is perhaps most symbolic of the way the culinary landscape has changed here in the City, perhaps around the country as well.
More from SFGate:
It will take place from 11am to 7pm, and for last time, it will take place in the
Mission District on Folsom Street, between 20th and 26th Streets. As Jonathan Kauffman
pointed out a few weeks back, the Street Food Festival has outgrown its Mission blocks, and though the future is uncertain, the organizers are hoping to find a larger, yet affordable new location.
This year will feature over 85 vendors, including both restaurants and La Cocina vendors. Admission is free, but diners have to pay for individual food items ($3-$8) and drinks ($5 for beer and $10 for Rye on the Road cocktails.)
The full list of vendors is below, and each will serve two to three dishes. (For a cool look into the massive prep, check out
Mission Local.) The full menu is ever-changing and too long to list, but notable items include Nojo’s signature Nojo Sundae, Radio Africa’s ahi tuna kitfo, A16′s meatball sandwiches, Stones Throw’s puffed potato and egg, and KoJa Kitchen’s kamikaze fries. Nombe will be dishing its ramen burger, and both 4505 Meats and Kronnerburger will be slinging burgers.

I am sure you recognize some, and not others. The best thing to do is look for the longest lines. The next best thing to do is look for the shortest lines. My goal is always to find the most unusual dishes. On my last La Cocina experience, I found a great dessert, vanilla ice cream topped with caramelized worm larvae. It reminded me so much of Bangkok and Luang Prabang (Laos).
It should be lots of fun, crowded, and crazy. See you there!!! PS: Started with crème brulee', followed by a beef or chicken quesadilla, and a cucumber salad. I think the order was backwards. But, as my dear friend Debbie always says, as an adult, we can have dessert anytime we want! Susie had the mango sticky rice, Mike and I had a beer in a plain brown wrapper.
