Again, hello readers and sorry for the delay! Internet has been questionable and/or I've been exceedingly busy, so I know I owe you almost a week. So for that, settle in and get ready to read!
Today, we got in to San Diego around 9:30...right on time, but after 17 hours of flying in the past 27, it seemed a bit too late. Luckily, our bags came out quickly, and there was a shuttle from National waiting so we could get straight to the rental. The shuttle driver actually knew me by name...I'm guessing from the uniqueness of our trip and the number of times I've changed the reservation, it caught their eye. As it was a Tuesday morning, National was busy with business people, which worked out great for us. They were bringing new cars around every couple minutes, and even though I just booked Emerald Aisle, they were offering Executive as well just to get people out and moving. We ended up with a nice Ford Edge, which easily will fit all four of us and our luggage.
First stop: In-N-Out Burger. Sure, we got there around 11:00, but we were not the only ones there, and
it was about 3:00 our time. So no shame. And SO worth it. After that, we headed to a park/beach near Sea World, where we just walked, enjoyed the warmth and sun, and sat on the grass for a bit. On day 1 of the trip, way back in early July, Serena broke her phone screen, so we had an appointment at 1:00 to finally get it fixed. While the Apple Store worked on that, we went shopping and picked up a phone clip for the car (so the driver could see directions easily), and a nice speaker to carry when hiking and whatnot.
In the afternoon, we made it to Old Town San Diego, where we wandered around and found an awesome old-school coffee/tea shop, which we indulged in. That was followed by an artisan olive oil shop, where we got to taste some of their dozen-odd flavors. We may have bought a lot. No promises either way. We eventually made it to our Airbnb, in a cute apartment complex in Hillcrest, the "gayborhood" of San Diego. Our host has a tiny dog called Tuxedo who has more energy than any living being should, but is equally adorable.
We met the dog and dropped off our stuff, before heading up to Torrey Pines park, on the coast a bit north of San Diego. While there, I went for a run, while Serena relaxed on the beach. We went for a swim and watched the sun go down while we were in the perfect water, then headed back.
We finally met our host in the evening, and ended up going out with him and his boyfriend to an awesome bar/restaurant for some much-needed food (sausage and cheese platter) and some less-needed-but-still-appreciated drinks. I finally got hit with the jetlag there, so rest is important. But tomorrow, we are on to see the Safari Park north of San Diego!
