We all got up at the early hour of 7am so that we could be trekking by 8am to hit the the low tide hiking window at a good time. We didn't actually start until 8:30am but we still had plenty of time. We trekked along the grassy bluffs for a half mile, passed Sea Lion Gulch, started through tons if poison oak (it's all over this trail) and then I shed first blood. I was looking out to my right towards the sea lions, I think, and I missstepped down into a hole of roots instead of the trail. Down I went, and it was my left knee that kept me from going down the slope to my right. Just a good abrasion and bruising. Chris busted out the first aid kit and Joy gave ... read more

Chris and I got up about 5:30am to start the long drive, picking up three of our friends along the way to driving to Black Sands Beach trailhead in Shelter Cove- a good five hour drive all by itself. We only stopped in Willits for a brief lunch at a Mexican restaurant before getting more gas and continuing our drive. The other four people not in our car were also making good time. We arrived at the trailhead just in time for our 1:30pm shuttle with Lost Coast Adventures. The plan was to leave our cars here at the Black Sands trailhead, shuttle north, and then backpack the 26mi towards our cars over the next four days. The shuttle ride itself was a long, windy 2 hours across mountain roads- many dirt and strewn with rubble. ... read more

Kate here... We're winding down our last week here with my Mom in Honeydew. This past Saturday evening, we finished our 4 day/3 night backpacking trip down the Lost Coast. The weather was perfect, we barely saw anyone, and (aside from a couple of blisters and some sore muscles) managed to trudge our way down the coast with no problems or injuries. We saw an otter, lots of sea lions, and no bears. But when we got back to my Mom's house, a bear had broken into the horse barn twice going after grain with molasses. If it isn't a skunk in the house, or racoon in the catfood, or a bear in the grain, it is something else out here in the sticks. I miss it. There are lots of pictures. Really good ones. We're ... read more

Kate here again... Just checking in to give a shout out to our blog peeps. We don't have any new pictures just yet, though we took a few down at the beach at the mouth of the Mattole River. The dogs enjoyed the ocean very much. We've been relaxing at my Mom's house, and I've been showing Shay around the area where I grew up here in Southern Humboldt. Today we carried a half-dozen pieces of plywood flooring into the house for my Mom. Woohoo fun. This weekend is the annual 4th of July BBQ (not always observed exactly on the 4th of July) at the Mattole Grange. Mmmm mmm good bbq beef roasts and slow-cooked beans. We're going to depart for our 4 day backpacking trip on the Lost Coast on Weds July 5th. We ... read more
