As you might expect, blogging was not as smooth as I though it would be, and this is the first time I have managed to update, although I am pleased to say it hasn't cost me anything. Two weeks has flown by, briefly comprising:- Las Vegas - which is fabulous, hot hot hot though, so we took advantage of the enormous fake beach at the Mandelay Bay. The Venetian, our second stop, was more fabulous still however; ate a meal in a facsimile of St Marks square (with beautiful painted sky a la Canaletto) which left me wondering if I still need to see the real thing (only briefly) Grand Canyon - a helicopter ride out there - in a thunderstorm, white knuckles all the way for Cliff and slightly for me too - to stay ... read more

I'm not going to lie; it felt wonderful to leave San Francisco. We headed north on the 101. After nearly taking out some pedestrians, we found ourselves on the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge is, well, very long, which means my dad would hate it. It was also beautiful and covered in a thick, cool fog. From its streets, we could look back on the city. We didn't have to go too far from the bridge before the temperature started to finally rise. At 70 degrees, we put down the top of the convertible and cruised through the rolling hills of northern California. Soon, the ground turned golden, and it was spotted with funky looking trees that looked like something out of a photo of Africa. The temperature continued to climb, and soon we were ... read more

We just got back from a week-long trip around NoCal. We were in Napa to begin with for three days. Then we spent a brief period of time in Sacramento for a wedding. Afterwards, we drove back to Sonoma for more wine, food, and hiking - and then ended our trip in San Francisco. I didn't write extensive journals and the USA isn't that exciting to read or even write about (for me), so just a few notes here. Day by Day Thursday July 24th Key Memories • Oxbow Public Market - Pica Pica - Arepas rock! I never had venezuelan food before. • Walking through Downtown Napa • Driving up the Silverado Trail to Calistoga - gorgeous • "Old Faithful" • Walking around downtown Calistoga - Bar Vino • Golden Haven Hot Springs Resort & ... read more

(Og her bliver vandet ... read more

We actually hadn't even heard of this until we looked at the book but we're glad we did. One problem with Napa is that it is a bit of a pain to get to if you're staying in downtown San Francisco. Taking the fairly self-explanatory name of 'Wine Train' - we weren't that keen on hiring a car and driving there and we were also quite keen on Champagne Vista Dome upgrade which had to be booked through the Train company only and therefore we couldn't book on one of those third-party tours which pick you up at your hotel. So we needed a combination of subways and buses to take us 2 and a half hours to Napa, but it was well worth it. The Train takes you from Napa to St.Helena and back in ... read more

With the best weather we'd experienced in over a week, we donned our sundresses and headed to Napa Valley for some wine tasting (again with Pete!) ! We started at V Sattui to get some food, and from there went to a few other vineyards (usually seeking out those with the most tastings for the least amount of money). We each purchased some wine, quantity increasing as the day went on (and bac's rose). Our favorite server of the day was Bob at Elizabeth Spencer whose infectious excitement and crude frankness got us pumped about WINE! Overall the day was great, but not much to say. check the pictures! Afterwards we headed to a hubbard household in Davis to spend the night. We had an amazing home-made meal, most of which came from their garden, and ... read more

We arrived in Napa to an extreme heat wave of over 100 degrees for several days—very unusual for mid-May. Thankfully, the heat broke and we had lovely weather for the next two weeks. The wineries beckoned, so we drove off in search of some fine, but reasonably priced wines. Alas, they were few and far between. Most wineries charge a tasting fee of $5 to $15, and many of the wines we sampled were OK but not worth the price, in our opinion. But not to complain—two weeks in the lovely Napa and Sonoma Valleys were quite enjoyable. Alan set up a private tasting with a very small winemaker who produces award-winning pinot noir. We met Kent at his storage cellar and he gave us a barrel-tasting of his 2005 pinot, which we liked very much. ... read more

Wine alternative in Wine Country Ok, this trip was supposed to be a surprise b'day gift for my fiancee, but the weather during the weekend closest to her birthday was so lousy that I had to postpone it. As it turns out, I couldn't be any happier that the trip is postponed till now. The day is a bit longer, the weather is very summer-like. Un-be-lief-able! whoo hoo. We start the trip early today, but we still don't get to Bale Grist Mill State Park until 11:30 am. The turn to the state park is off highway 29 after you pass St. Helena and the St. Helena outlet. We don't quite know what to expect, but when I planned for this trip, I am looking for something that is also outside of wine or winery. In ... read more

hi all, it's jen in portland. brad and amy are packing up, frantically dodging rain drops and digesting their breakfasts. i took them to the "tin shed", which always means a long wait, and now they're running behind... so i'm hopping on to get an update out before they get on the road to head east. they stopped in sonoma to wine taste and had a early dinner before they headed to me in Portland. They stayed in the Valley of the Rouge national park just north of the California/Oregon boarder.... read more

French Oak, Wine Caves, and a Rapping Wine Server. I've toured 4 amazing wine regions in Australia, traveled through the New Zealand Marlborough region, been on a Sideways tour in Santa Ynez Valley, tasted at some wineries in Temecula, and have even been to a wedding in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. With all of this cork popping, sniffing, pouring, and swirling, the one place I hadn't been to was the famous Napa Valley. My parents, being avid wine connoisseurs themselves, planned a trip up to Napa for 3 days. Needless to say, it didn't require much convincing and I agreed to pick them up at the San Francisco Airport to be their personal wine tasting chauffeur. I booked a very nice hotel called The Meritage Resort, which was right on the sout... read more
