Six friends and I decided to drive to Mt Shasta near the Oregon border for a little quiet time. We spent three days in the area, exploring the mountain and the surrounding areas. We visited near the top of the mountain. It is a very peaceful place... we sat and contemplated and meditated for a long time. The area is above the timberline, and is very rocky with few trees... feels barren. Yet, bees and butterflies were dancing here and there, hovering over the many plants that were growing on the ground. The mountain is powerful though; you can almost taste the raw energy that the mountain gives off. We then went down to the lower Panther Meadow. The meadow is very lush with green ground plants and wildflowers. A little murmuring brook cuts through the ... read more

First of all, accept my apologies for not updating this overdue blog for a long time. Some of it was due to laziness, some of it was due to work, and some of it was due to planning and preparation for Florida trip. Now I am back and so is some activity on this page. This entry is in continuation with . We stayed a night at Burney, CA. Next morning, we drove north to the Mount Shasta. We got some stunning view of Mt. Shasta from the highway. Mt. Shasta is a 14,179 feet tall stratovolcano. It is not connected with any other mountains directly. This makes its views even more stunning! Everett Memorial Highway takes you to the highest accessible point on Mt. Shasta by road. Depending on weather conditions and presence of snow, ... read more

The 4th of July Run/Walk is the big shindig each year in Mt Shasta. It's become so popular chances are you won't find a room if you haven't booked one already. There's a KOA camp in town plus camp sites at Lake Siskiyou, but if you do plan to be in Mt Shasta over the 4th, better find a place to stay now. Gas is always at least 30 cents higher in Siskiyou County than either Redding or Medford/Klamath Falls, so top off before you come to town. If you think gas prices are high where you are...you ain't seen nothing yet, wail until you stop in Mt Shasta. If you're wondering how New Zealand and Mt Shasta are connected, read Traveling New Zealand. New Zealand's South Island is similar to the Cascade Mountains. Groceries are ... read more

It’s springtime in Mt Shasta-finally. After more than a week of sloppy skies, my cats have abandoned the wood stove for mouse patrol. The dreary skies failed to keep the summer wanderers in the valley. I saw my first purple hippy bus yesterday. Summers in Mt Shasta always pull in a variety of strangers from jet setting guests at Hearst Castle on the McCloud River to old hippies with their flying hair and rickity buses. Most of the tourists fit somewhere in between- just working people happy to spend a few days in a small town at the base of a very large mountain. Geri... read more

Although my dream is to travel New Zealand, I live near beautiful Mt Shasta, home of the Lemurians. Lemurians are kissing cousins of the Irish Leprechauns. They're short, mischievous and very hard to see. I've lived there many years and haven't seen one yet. But, I've never seen the space ships that come to the mountain for refueling either. It's been a cold hard winter, but I'm looking forward to spring and the new crop of animals. Even the mountain lions that wander through my property. Tangerine ... read more

I left Cottage Grove after work on Friday. I was a bit anxious about the drive as I was unsure about the weather conditions. However; the road was really clear and I got to Linda's in Yreka, California at about 7:15pm. Linda then drove the remainder of the way to Mount Shasta. Luckily she knew exactly how to get there. Even in the dark you could tell the place was lovely. Our lodge was right next to the lake and it had a real flame effect fire, which was just as well as it was freezing outside. The roads here were pretty clear too although there was big piles of snow at the sides of the roads so it was clear there was a lot of snow about. http://www.mountshastaresort.com/lodging.htm The above website will let you see ... read more

Yesterday our USA road trip across country from San Francisco back to the east coast kicked off. Jason, Talula, and I started out heading up to Weed, California just north of Mt. Shasta. The drive unfortunately began later in the afternoon and most of the 4 hour drive was in the dark. We stopped 80 miles in at the Pilot Gas Station and I was excited to see gas as low as $3.29. I always find large gas stations with shops fascinating. This one in particular was huge- selling music cd's to donuts to teddy bears. The stations bathroom, which is usually not my point of interest on a trip, had an interesting feature for the weary traveler. Has anyone ever seen a cologne vending machine? Well my friends, stop by this Pilot Gas Station and ... read more

Many people believe Mt. Shasta has supernatural powers, from the Native Americans known as the Shasta to the multitude of residents that make their home near the volcano today. Adherents to Hinduism, New Age beliefs and Buddhist monks are drawn to the volcano's serenity and imposing presence. So are outdoor enthusiasts, because at 14,200 feet Shasta is the 2nd largest volcano in the Cascades- so high most of the time is creates its own weather. The Japanese religion of Shugendo, Lao Tsu and Hinduism all had it right- this mountain, like many other striking skyscrapers of stone, has some sort of spiritual energy that is hard to describe. I find anything on earth described as "Super-Natural" hard to swallow, as the separation between the spiritual and the physical realm is a western concept I have long ... read more
