Johnny Rockets Diner A 10hr night flight on the 16th February heading west out of Fiji saw us cross the international date line and consequently arrive in Los Angeles on the same day, but 10hrs earlier. We had gained back half a day and as a result lived the same day again, crazy. As we only had a couple of days in LA and wanted to see as much as possible, we became classic tourists and hopped on board a sight-seeing bus. A tour of the stars homes was first on the agenda including those of Leonarndo Di Caprio, Adam Sandler, Britney Spears and Jack Nicholson to name a few. After making us green with envy we passed through Beverley Hills and had a glance at Bel Air.
Feeling like we'd just joined the set of Pretty Women we walked along Rodeo Drive and viewed The Regent Beverley Wiltshire Hotel. As Bec S loves her films she was in movie heaven. Stopping at the Farmers Market for lunch, Becs and Becs enjoyed their first experience of shopping in LA...and the budget goes out of the window! After seeing all these delights, Hollywood was next on the cards. A little seedy but with a
lot of character we saw the walk of fame witnessing stars from Elton John to Steven Speilberg. As the Kodak Theatre was preparing for the up coming oscars we were treated to many acts on the street. These varied from dancers to Micheal Myers (Halloween) to a very bad Darth Vader!
A long day saw us finish off with a quick visit to sunset strip, the stars playground, a tour of downtown in LA amongst the skyscrapers and finally a stop at Mulholland Drive to view the famous Hollywood sign. It was pretty far away although clear to see. Unfortunatley it was the closest we could get as someone had previously committed suicide from the 'H' and for security reasons we were not allowed up there. The spot did however provide panoramic views over LA, absolutely incredible.
It was play time on our last day as we went to Universal Studios. The day was fun filled and packed to the brim with excitement. With plenty to do such as riding Jurassic Park, taking on The Mummy rollercoater to fighting the flames of Backdraft. The Studio Tour was awesome as we went behind the scenes and got an insight
into how stunts are done and how sets are made. Bec S was especially excited to see the set of Desperate Housewives. The Fear Factor Live show was simply fantastic. Contestants were made to eat fish guts and pigs eye balls aswell as put their hands in a tank of eels...nice. The 4D Shrek show was cool as Shrek had to recapture the Princess and Water World was well, wet but an awesome show. We had many photos taken with the stars from Beetlejuice to Spongebob Square Pants and Shrek. Most fun was had with The Simpsons. As Homer ruffled Becs S hair Bart took an interest in her bag and took out her toothbrush!! Bec C however found this bullying most laughable as she held marge's hand. A fantastic day was topped with a visit to Universal's Citywalk, famed for its restaurants and shopping.
We stayed in Santa Monica, supposedly one of the nicest neighbourhoods in LA. To be fair it lived up to expectation as we walked along the 3rd Street Promade. It felt like Christmas, the cold chill in the air, the bright lights, masses of shops and eateries, spirits seemed high as people watched the
talented street performers. To top off a great day we thought we'd go to a classic American diner, Johnny Rockets. We propped ourselves up at the bar, unknown to us that the magic of the last two days was about to become a bit of a nightmare. Two European guys decided to prop themselves up next to us and kept staring and laughing but speaking in their own language. Bec S not too keen on rude people told them in no uncertain terms that we were not interested in having a conversation with them. Minutes later they left suddenly. As we recieved our cheque it was then that Bec S realised her bag was no longer sat at the base of her stool. Clearly we must have broken their hearts and they sought revenge, rudeness at its best. As the panic began to set in Bec S realised what was gone, everything. From passport to airline tickets, camera (incl 1000 unsaved pictures) to dive log book, ipod to her purse containing every card and $160 to her toothbrush that was last seen alive in the hands of Bart Simpson. After several hours at the Santa Monia Police station the bag
Fiji to California
Airport sign, Nadi was not recovered but the British Consulate is issueing an emergency passport to get the two Becs home on time.
