Dear All Yay! California, here I am! I write at the beginning of another two-week adventure through one of my favourite countries - the US of A! This trip was actually four years in the planning, as along with South Africa last summer, this one was also delayed from four years ago due to the world having gone crazy at the time. For my first US trip after that time, I wanted to go to the closest U... Read Full Entry

Thanks Dave. Yes, I think you're right! It was a Sunday, and tourists like myself were out in their full force.

Hollywood Sign

The famous Hollywood Sign
I remember the first time I saw this sign. It is a really cool feeling. Movies shape the world more than we think about on a daily basis and give us impression of the world. Lots of glitz and glamour in this city as well as the dark underbelly that they often ignore.

Hollywood
Thanks Merry! Yes, it was for me too a cool feeling seeing this sign. Hollywood has indeed shaped my imagination and understanding of the world, your words are very true. I imagine there is indeed a dark underbelly to it all. I think this is what the "Hotel California" song is all about.

The views are far better from this location than you would think. It is lovely architecture.

It's real man
Travel to La La Land lets us see all those things we've been watching for years.

Great comment, I love it! Very much one of those places you have to see to believe it really does truly exist!

A great start to the LA area
You've started your trip with a lot of the rich and famous. It is fun looking at all of those houses and it sounds like Rick provided an amazing tour. I'm glad he didn't cancel on you since you were the only one signed up. I'm sure you'll discuss the sad homeless population in your next blog as anyone who visits LA cannot miss the tragedy that is going on ... The walk of stars is always fun. I have many photos of Stars. LA is iconic. Eager to read more. MJ

LA
Thanks Merry! Yes, I plan to mention my experiences with the homelessness in my next blog. A tragedy for the city indeed. Rick was just great, as was his tour. And I loved walking among the stars! 😁

Cielo Drive

Totally my kind of place
Next time I am in LA I will definitely go there. Even though the original building where the murders took place has been torn down it is still cool to go there. I also loved the Tarantino movie by the way. I can recommend the book Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi by the way. VB was the prosecutor af the Manson trial and in the book he tells the story of the murders and the trials. /Ake

Glad to know I'm not the only one with an interest in this infamous place. The movie was indeed amazing, one of the most spectacular and unexpected finales I've ever seen I think! I shall have to have a look into that book.

Another must see place for next time
Another place I didn't see last time I was in LA but that I have to visit next time. /Ake

Hollywood
Oh wow, how much fun must it have been to follow the traces of famous movies, actors, and actresses! Great idea to put yourself into the mood for Hollywood by watching Charlie's Angels and Die Hard (I like sitting in the back of the plane, too, by the way). The tour seems to have been a lot of fun, although I can relate to the awkward feeling you had when you felt like stalking the celebrities.

Hollywood
Thanks for this Katha! I imagine we all have our own impressions of the world based on numerous productions coming out of Hollywood, it really is quite something to be in the magical place itself. Thanks for relating to the awkwardness of the tour, though of course I think it still has to be done, lol! Yes, the back of the plane is a good place to hide away on these long-haul journeys.
