It's 9:04pm on Thursday, November 8th - my second day here in Fresno. But first, let's hear about my first day in California... Day 1 I woke up yesterday morning at 7am, checked out of the hotel, packed up my belongings into my car and drove over to my aunt and uncle's for breakfast at 8am. We had a delicious breakfast of potatoes, eggs, onions and tomatoes all fried up in the skillet. Around 9am or so we finished and I headed on the road heading for Fresno. I gained another hour once I passed into the California border (which only took 30 minutes or so of driving). That makes the third hour I've gained since I started traveling - first was from daylight savings time on Monday, then I gained an hour when I reached ... read more

Aaaaaaah, relaxation! It is so sweet! So the summer of living in a tent, showering once a week and constantly covering my body in bumps and bruises is over, oh so sad! I had a great summer at Castle Lake. Working at the field station was awesome. I got to meet and work with many great people from near and far, which is always fun. And when I wasn't working I got to hike to some amazing waterfalls in the area, go berry picking until my fingers were purple and got to swim until I shrivled up like a rasin! While I did miss working at my usual summer camp job I found working at Castle Lake to be a very positive experience both for the educational as well as life lessons I learned there. But ... read more

I taught for two days with Adama, my Fulbright exchange teacher and then handed over the keys. He survived his first day yesterday, only slightly bruised. Now I have only days before I leave. Too much to do, and too little time. The impending sadness of telling my mom goodbye and my friends of 20 years is creeping into my daily thoughts. Have already shed some silent tears and am trying not to dwell on any airport scene. I can't believe that in a matter of 5 days I'll be on a continent I haven't set foot on in 27 years.....that's a very very long time. Part of my heart has been in Africa that whole time. I've tried to keep my expectations low for this coming year; I vascillate between images of friendly dinners with ... read more

After going to Washington, D.C. July 31st through August 3rd, I am feeling much better. I met my exchange partner there, as well as the other two American Fulbrighter single women who will live in the same apartment building as I and the other two Senegalese teachers who will teach in Colorado and Boston. My exchange partner is a real delight....very funny, smart, excellent French and English. I think he'll do fine at Bullard. I've shown him around Fresno (Fig Garden, Tower District, TARGET!, Al Rico Tacos, Toledos, In-N-Out, the West Side, Fresno High area, etc.) and he'll go to the mountains w/ a colleague and see Huntington Lake this Tuesday. He loves it so far. As for me, I really like the other women that will be on this adventure with me. The American Fulbrighter ... read more
