Another busy and fresh-air day. It is almost 9 pm and we are finally in for the night, having left just after 8! This vacationing is quite challenging! Our first stop was Ramsey Canyon, 2 hours away. It is a Natural Conservancy – used to be a privately held area. There are still a few houses here and there in the lower areas. We walked about ½ mile along the canyon, and then climbed all the way up the Hamburg Trail to the Overlook – at least 500’ elevation change – to get into the pine forests and try to find the red crossbill (some people coming down had seen it that day). It was quite a challenging climb – glad I took my hiking poles. We were rewarded by the lovely smell of the pine ... read more

BATTLE OF THE BULLS The Mormons had gotten themselves kicked out of both Jackson County, Missouri and out of Nauvoo, Illinois by January of 1846 and were hunkered down on the prairie with the Pottawatomie Indians up in Iowa. They were busily trying to find a way of surviving through the hard winter ahead with what few meager possessions they still had. Plans were to leave the United States soon as they could and settle somewhere out west in territory belonging to Mexico. They were seeking a place so remote that the Mexican Government would not bother them, and they would be free from persecution by Americans. They wanted land that nobody else could live in or near. Problem was they couldn’t get there without help from the government. In January Brigham ... read more

The guano contains enough of the sun to nourish those that feed on it, including microscopic plant life. For those of you who don't know, about this time every year my exhusband spends a week in my house. Long story short it means a lot to our sons, but quite frankly ... read more

For anyone who is reading this and does not know, we lost our mother, Kathleen on April 3rd, 2010. It was the day before Easter and she died at the Everett Transitional Care Unit, which was a rehab place associated with Providence Hospital in Everett, WA. Mom had many medical issues from her diagnoses of Essential Thrombocytosis back in 1988 to her recent diagnoses in 2009 of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. The PSP was a neurological disorder and the ET was a blood disorder. PSP caused her to fall and injure herself, which was lethal given her blood disorder. The blood disorder finally reacted to a traumatic fall by developing thrombosis (which eventually got infected in Mexico). After being hospitalized in two different Mexican hospitals and receiving blood transfusions and various antibiotics Leon and I were able ... read more
