Our plans got updated for today. Our helicopter tour was supposed to be at 2PM but the tour company called this morning and asked if we could come at 10AM instead because the winds were supposed to pick up this afternoon and they thought we would have more enjoyable flight in the morning.
I am attaching another one of Adam's edited videos from our helicopter ride. It was a short flight (15-20 minutes in the air), we saw some of what we had already seen in the hot air balloon but the helicopter covered more distance. In case you are wondering, the helicopter was another voucher situation so we did not pay again to see the same scenery from the same vantage point as the hot air balloon. The helicopter pilot basically just rattled off every rock formation name he could, nothing very insightful - but the views again were breathtaking.
The rescheduling of the helicopter tour freed up our afternoon so we decided to take a 30 minute drive to Jerome. This is a historic mining town; population of ~450 that is located on top of a hill at 5,200 feet. It is now an artist community with a
good number of shops and restaurants. We climbed the winding road to Jerome and parked as soon as we found a parking lot. We had heard that you can walk the whole town so we parked and off we went. First we located the restaurant I had found online for lunch - The Asylum Restaurant located in the Jerome Grand Hotel. Of course this was about the furthest point from our car - uphill. Did I mention we were at 5,200 feet elevation? The view from our table was amazing. The restaurant was heavily decked out for Halloween. We both got sandwiches that were OK - not great, but good. I think I may be putting little too much trust in online reviews. Since I relied on them so heavily for this trip I am making sure to add my own reviews to help future travelers.
We then walked through the entire town of Jerome. I forgot to mention that this is an artist community that is firmly rooted in the 60s....lots of 60s music playing in the shops, lots of incense and lots of Birkenstocks. I did not buy any jewelry in Uptown Sedona because we had been told
the prices would be better in Jerome. I found this generally to be true. I did buy a piece of jewelry in Jerome - a ring - it ended up being from an artist in New Mexico...go figure. Just a side note if you ever shop for a ring at such a high elevation - know your ring size because your fingers will swell to little sausages not allowing the ability to try any on.
We had a good time in Jerome and also got a little exercise.
We had dinner tonight at a restaurant in Cottonwood, closer to our resort in Cornville than Sedona is - Nic's Italian Steak & Crab House. Another restaurant that got good reviews online - I added my "extremely disappointed" review to TripAdvisor before typing up this blog entry. Try, try again....
Tomorrow is our day trip to the Grand Canyon.
