20. august, dag 8 Route 66 til Las Vegas, 92 grader farenheit (33 grader celsius) Mulig vi skulle hørt på countrymusikk, men her går det i Radioresepsjonen. «Yes, yes. You see what i mean David?»

So we are getting towards the end of the tour now but today we head to the Grand Canyon, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Now I saw the Grand Canyon back in 2000 and something & to be honest wasn't that impressed. We flew in from Vegas & landed on the South Rim & all I can remember thinking is "it's just a bunch of rocks". After the incredible Bryce Canyon a few days back it will have to be something special today. Luckily it was quite cool this morning....only 86 degrees at 9am!!! It's around a 2 hour journey from Page & across Arizona. So it's IPOD on & I start to make an attempt to add up how much I've spent! I have to say even with the dollar being ... read more
Sunset over the Grand Canyon

Two years ago we visited the Hoover Dam in Nevada. We looked up to see a suspended bridge being built as a new bypass over the Hoover cavern. We were so disappointed when we crossed. There was no view and know visual that we were high up. As you can see by the picture - all you can see is a cement wall, There was no pull-out before or after to take any pictures. If you want to see how spectacular this bridge type "Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge" in your search engine and the first link has great pictures. From Hoover Dam we traveled to Flagstaff, Arizona and drove up to the Grand Canyon National Park. Terry had never visited this natural wonder, but I had seen it at age 16 with my parents. I have ... read more

Today was the last day of our grandkids trip and we had lots to pack in. 1st off, catch the 8a.m. shuttle bus to Hermit’s Rest for the Junior Ranger/Family Hike. We haven’t been to Hermit’s Rest in many years and think that we just stopped and looked much like yesterday, but we didn’t even know about the trail so this was all new. We got to the trail and found the ranger, there was only 2 other people, a father and his son so we were lucky to be in such a small group. The Hermit’s Rest trail is mostly unmaintained which means that it is rocky and uneven. It is really a beautiful trail but steeper than the Bright Angel with many steps carved out of rock that are tall. I think that it ... read more

Last Sunset on our Grandkids Trip

We had planned to get up early, be on the 8a.m. shuttle to the end of the road at Herman’s Rest then go on the 9a.m. Family Ranger Hike down the Herman’s Rest Trail. Unfortunately we learned, earlier, that our campsite was reserved for the night so we would need to move. The host told us of another site which was likely to be vacated but we needed to make certain. We finally saw the campers and verified that they would be leaving so went to dump while we waited. We dumped at a private campground and were happy that we were in Ten-X rather than have full hookups with internet and close neighbors. By 11:30 we packed up a lunch, got into Grand Canyon Park, parked at the Bright Angel and hiked down the Bright ... read more
The View from the Bright Angel Trail

Another day of driving and we were at the Grand Canyon south rim. As the campgrounds were full we stopped at a campground just south of the park called Ten X. The campground host saw us looking for a site, we’d left Bel and Elias at one already. The host gave us the number of one he thought was perfect; he went and picked up the kids while we got into our campsite. In the morning we went straight to the canyon as we wanted to eat breakfast at the El Tovar. When our boys were young and the farm was falling apart we went to the Grand Canyon and someone told us to go to the El Tovar for breakfast as one can find a cheaper yet just as lovely meal. We have always done ... read more
A First Look at the Canyon

Our next stop is the mighty Grand Canyon, North rim (out of 5 million visitors to the park each year, 4,500,000 go to the popular south rim, but we hate crowds) Then it was off to Mesa Verde, (green table) where the Pueblo nation lived from 600 to 1200 A.D. (talk about burning the mortgage!) It was there were we met up with Cantor Sharlein's cousin who is a Law Enforcement Park Ranger (we need all the advantages we can get). Next stop, 350 miles uphill, Arches National Park, how bizarre a place! And from there Denver. An oil change, upper radiator hose, 2 new front tires and a roll and a half of duct tape, we're still holding up.... read more

Mule rides into the canyon

It has been a crazy few days! Being without internet since we were in Kansas has been painful! But we are happy to update the blog briefly now. We drove from Lawrence, KS to Colorado Springs where we visited the Focus on the Family world headquarters and enjoyed some smoothies at Whit's End! We bought a few books at the bookstore and then headed off to the hotel. Before dinner we drove 10 minutes south to Garden of the Gods and were amazed at the beautiful rock formations; it was overcast so we could not really see the mountains that evening. When we woke up the next morning there was a dazzling view of the Rocky Mountains including Pikes Peak. We stopped by Garden of the Gods again and took more pictures and then started our ... read more

Incredible day. The Grand Canyon is just too big to really comprehend what we are looking at. Viewed from the South Rim on Rim trail from above. You almost want to reach out and touch its grandeur but it is impossible due to safety. I will be posting photos shortly.... read more
Grand Canyon

Driving up to the Grand Canyon (GC) was an experience in itself, driving on the historic Route 66 we passed through the heart of the Mojave Desert – the first time we had seen salt plains. We stopped off at a small town called Williams where we saw a few cowboys and a reenactment of an old shootout that took place here in the 1800’s. We had drove, probably too much that day and it was late when we finally found camp at a petrol station; to our horror the airbed had broken – nooooooooo, so we had another uncomfortable night’s sleep ahead. In the morning we woke and did the final drive to the Canyon, and the first time we saw it was literally breath taking…it’s hard to describe in words the grandeur and beauty ... read more
