This was a tool used to scrape wax from the interior of the Alaska Pipeline when oil first started flowing in the pipe. Once it became warm enough it was no longer needed and a lighter and softer polyurethane version is used today to keep the pipeline clear.

Actually, the sunrise. In fact, this was the first sunrise we had seen in about 4 days since the sun had always been UP in Bettles. Taken from the plane on the way from Fairbanks to Minneapolis.
