From our float trip down the Koyukuk river. Saw this wolf trotting along the side of the river as we floated silently by. The wolf is kind of hard to see but he's right in the center of the picture.

This is Eric, our innkeeper, guide, and host extraordinaire. He's holding an artifact from one of the buildings in Old Bettles. It is actually a manual washing machine. You put clothes in a tub and use this thing to agitate them. He says you can buy the modern day version - but it's made of plastic. This one was heavy metal.

This is the original lodge built in the 1940's. The first building in New Bettles was the Bettles Lodge. Wien Airlines built the Lodge for the many travelers who passed through Bettles. Wien Airlines was established by the most famous bush pilot in Alaska history, Noel Wien. This Historic Lodge was the first of several Wien Lodges around the state and is on the National Historic Register. The lodge rooms are on the second floor. The first floor has the coffee shop, restaurant, and gift shop.
