This morning I used the park's free shower to clean the road off me and wash my hair. The water smelled like rust! Upon closer inspection the shower curtain liner was stained a reddish brown as was the shower head. The water sprayed kinda wonky coming out of there, too. Great. Oh well, better to use their already messed up equipment than possibly ruin ours. Quick shower because I didn't want to be in that water any longer than absolutely necessary.
Back at the trailer I looked at the water coming out of the faucet. It had a dirty yellow tint to it. Lovely. I ran it through our Brita pitcher and the yellow was a little lighter, but still there. Oh, yay.
Tomorrow we'll be taking a bus into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and the bus will be picking us up at the Visitor Center in Glennallen. We didn't have much of anything planned for today so we drove into the thriving metropolis of Glennallen to find where we would meet the bus. It wasn't difficult to find.
A quick tour of the Visitor Center and I left with a handful of pamphlets and guides. Mike left
with a Christmas ornament and a fishing fly. He and Dave are going to try fishing the creek behind our trailers the day after tomorrow. One of the other campers gave them a tip as to the better places to try; farther upstream.
Yesterday we tried to go out for dinner, but by the time we made camp, fed the dogs and were ready to find a place to eat, most of the local eateries were already closed or would be soon. Today we grabbed some lunch while we were out. The Latin (not Mexican) place we stopped at was one of the options we considered last night. As we were walking to the door, we passed a Hispanic man who was getting ready to get back on his very large, very loaded down motorcycle. There was barely room for him on the seat with all the gear he had strapped here, there and everywhere. He saw where we were headed and commented about how good their food was. Well you couldn't get much better endorsement. The food was as good as he said.
After lunch we went back to the campground for the rest of the day.
Behind our trailer at the edge of the grass is a glider bench. Mike and I took Charlie for a short walk then sat on the bench. Charlie decided to go exploring. Large, stacked rocks created a small embankment between the bench and the small grassy area that leads to the creek. Grass, weeds and flowers grew tall between the rocks. Charlie was sure there had to be some sort of vermin hiding in there somewhere; he just had to sniff them out. His hunt kept him busy and me entertained for 15 minutes or more. Finally he tired of the hunt and decided the cool gravel under the trailer was better. I had to coax him out so we could go inside where it would be more comfortable.
After dinner, well okay after Mike had dinner, we began getting things ready for our tour tomorrow. I didn't eat dinner because I was finally finishing the blog for the day we took the bus into Denali. Yeah, I'm that far behind. I didn't eat dinner, but I did have my ice cream for dessert (dinner?).
We have to catch the bus at 7:00 a.m. and we won't be
back until around 8:00 p.m. Snacks, lunch, water, dog food, bowls, camera, lenses, extra battery, sunscreen, bug spray, hanitizer, baby wipes - check, check, check, etc. Everything into backpacks and the cooler. Add the cold stuff and ice pack tomorrow.
I have to make it an early night because of the early, early wake-up tomorrow. No blogging tonight. Talk soon.
