Day 6 296 miles After cooking our own “hotel-delivered” breakfast again this morning, we packed up and headed out early for a long day on the road. Less than 2 blocks from the hotel we met a gaggle of geese sauntering across the road. Apparently, the wildlife around Anchorage like using the roads instead of the woods so much that, on the way out of Anchorage, we saw a “Moose Crash” sign on the main highway with a counter on it and luckily no moose have been hit since July 1st. The landscape was strange – it was either totally flat or straight up mountains (and we mean straight, snow-capped, jagged mountains) – there were no in-between rolling hills. There are 4 main roads in Alaska that are considered interstates, but they’re certainly not the same ... read more

Camped overnight by the side of the river which is fed from Exit Glacier. Had our first bit of rain during the night. Woke up to another beautiful morning. With having the gen set, shower and toilet on board it makes us free to camp virtually anywhere for the night. Also gives us the freedom to be totally alone with nature. Wish you could all experience this - waking up in the morning to nothing but the sound of the running water from the river and maybe a bird or two. Totally bliss! There are lots of RVs travelling in Alaska. Many of the locals own RVs as well as tourists. We are glad we chose this form of transport/accommodation - it ticks all the boxes. Off to Safeway this morning to stock up on groceries ... read more

I think I had too much coffee late last night. I went to bed thinking to myself of how tourist act on the big day...... Get to the to your 45 degree, 5AM, pick-up point hours earlier. Stand in line, waiting to get the best front seat for the most awesome view of your road trip. Mark your turf by standing stern with your arms crossed, talking trash how you are the most feared travel trailer to roam the state. Determine to know exactly where that bad boy is going to stop so you can be the one in the front of the line to greet the driver with the best toothless grin you can muster. Then, you can start to drool uncontrollably over that first passenger side seat right above the entrance stairwell. But wait, ... read more

By Darryl: DAY 63: Monday 14th June 2010 - COOPER LANDING Up around 6am this morning, I was excited at the prospect of the guided fishing trip today. After struggling to get to grips with the local regulations and a being a bit frustrated at all the limitations and most rivers being closed, it was my next best chance at catching a salmon (I had to catch up with Callum too!). It was a lovely morning but quite cold with a layer of frost on the car window, but that’s an Alaskan summer for you. I arrived at Run Wild - Alaskan River Adventures and chatted with George the manager, to find out that I have the privilege of being the only client on a drift boat (as they usually take 3 or 4) and my ... read more
