Spectacular view over Caribbean from walled city of Mayan ruins
Jose our Mexican guide is upset.
“All you want is to photograph iguanas!” he looks at our group with their cameras clicking on the iguanas that inhabit the Mayan ruins.

It is true. What with the intense heat 30C+ and humid we are not in a condition to take on an ancient civilization fascinating though it may be. The iguanas around our feet are more immediate and also photogenic.

I overhear some remark that they had expected something more spectacular and if they had known that the Mayan ruins at Tulum were not going to tick that box they would not have bothered with the two-hour journey to come here.

What really sets Tulum apart is the spectacular location. The Mayan ruins, a former walled city perched on the cliff tops, offers an amazing views over the Caribbean Sea.
And the walk to the top is worth all the hassle for this alone.
