MEX01
Border from US to Mexico. Today I crossed into Mexico!
Elias, his grandmother and I went accross the border to Piedras Negras, Coahuila. Its no problem getting into Mexico all you have to do is pay $2 USD.
It's really amazing crossing the border. You pay your money, the gate opens and you drive accross the bridge. As soon as you get to the other side of the bridge you are in another country. Captain obvious I know but just 100m seperates two completely different worlds.
I thought Eagle Pass was what Mexico would be like but Mexico was even further removed from the rest of the US. There is very little reference to America no Mc Donalds, Walmarts or billboards advertising US products. Everything is in Espanol no English anywhere, speed signs in kmph and the pay television company advertisng the Soccer world cup is SKY. It feels closer to Europe than the US.
Greeting you are military men holding machine guns. Border towns are extremely dangerous with the drug running and people smuggling, Recently they have had gun fights in the middle of the street. Normally the presence of Police and Military would make you feel safe but this is
MEX02
Two Countries meet. Mexico and apparently the Police and Military go by their own rules.
Crossing back into he USA is a different story. Sometimes your get the first degree sometimes they just check your passport.
Later that night we went back into Mexico with all of Elias's family for dinner. mmmmm Mexican food and Mexican beer delicious!
