Always a bright, sunny day here in Progreso. Saw volleyball on the beach this morning. Boat on shore selling fish. Lots of people around, and many pelicans and sea gulls swarming. The big fish were still intact, but had been sliced into steaks. The water seemed clearer today. Lots of swimmers out. More people around today. Probably some Mexican tourists in from Merida for the weekend. Our hotel was empty before, but now has no vacancy, although it is a small one. Took a walk west along the Malecon again. Heard the doves cooing. A dusty road continues past the end of the walkway, which we followed for a while. Many dogs roaming around. A guy with a cooler on the back of his cycle wanted to sell us fresh fish! People were friendly. A motorcycle ... read more

Breakfast on the roof, then a walk east along the beach for a couple of miles. We hit the high tide about 10:30. Beach was very secluded with just a few walkers and playing dogs. Many large homes, some almost mansions, some run down. Not much sign of life, no "for rent" signs, so probably vacation property of Mexicans. Saw many overturned fishing boats up on shore, and one fast-moving catamaran out on the water. Saw a couple of small kids playing in the water. The wind was very brisk. Lots of washed-up kelp along the shore. I picked up some small white shells as we walked along. Got a good view of the long pier. It goes out straight, then turns to the left. About 2.5km were built in 1942, a terminal was built in ... read more

Had fruit, rolls, and coffee for breakfast this morning on the roof. A little breezy, but very pleasant. No other guests are ever up there, so we have our own private patio. Progreso itself seems so much less crowded than yesterday. The cruise ships are now gone, and along with them the masses of people. Ships are said to come in a couple of times a week. We walked the beach west this morning. The water here is very murky, saw no swimmers. No pedestrians are allowed on the 5-mile pier, But a boardwalk circles around underneath the pier and takes you to the continuation of the Malecon. In this area you begin to see many old fishing boats. It is here that a walking pier juts off into the water. Several fishermen with nets and ... read more

Good breakfast of fruit, rolls, and coffee included at the hostel. Noticed this morning they have three house cats. Very cute. We reserved the same place for two nights after our return from Progreso. We spent the morning sightseeing. Walked to Plaza Grande. This time noticed lots of purple flowers, posts in which to plug your devices, lots of laurel trees, and several shoeshine chairs. Horses and carriages lined the street. On the east side of the Plaza is the Cathedral de San Ildefonso, begun in 1561. It Is on the site of an old Myan temple. Some of the stone from the temple was used in construction. There is a giant crucifix behind the altar, but the interior is not particularly ornate. A statue which was burned without charring was supposed to be present, but ... read more

After breakfast we headed off to the bus depot. We purchased tickets yesterday to Chichen Itza, then on to Merida. At the bus depot, Bob noticed that one of our tickets was for today, one for tomorrow. But we got it changed, no problem. A forty minute bus ride took us right to the parking lot at Chichen Itza, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Parking lot was full, packed with cars and tour buses. On the way in, vendors were selling hats and more hats. I got a sunhat and Bob got a safari hat ($3.50 each)! Entry to see the ruins was $16 per person. We had our bags from the bus, and found a spot to store our luggage gratis. Once we got inside, the place was so expansive that ... read more

Last night after the blog was published, we decided to get milkshakes. Found a good spot on the edge of Pargue Francisco. The park was lit up, and two church towers in the background were lit. Just beautiful. Wish we could get our photos into the Kindle. Found out this morning that Valladolid is an hour earlier than Cancun. Got up a little earlier than necessary. Got hot water immediately for showers, which is unusual here. Then we saw that the hot water heater was right next to our bathroom. After coffee and good bakery items for our included breakfast, we rented bikes at the hostel. Biked to a couple of cenotes, Samula and Dzitnup. The bikes were pretty old and one speed, but the ride was fairly flat. We followed a couple of back streets ... read more

After a yogurt and fruit breakfast included with our hotel stay, we headed to the bus depot. We purchased our tickets to Valladolid yesterday, $8(US) per person. Bus left on time at 9:45. All the bus employees seemed very happy, always smiling, very helpful. Two others got on the bus at the depot. But slow getting out of Cancun, many stops. Lots of oranges for sale along the road. Faster once we hit the highway. Many bicycles with several passengers in front in the small towns along the highway. Several garden shops with potted plants and trees for sale. People have more of a Mayan look here. In 3.5 hours, we were in Valladolid. From Lonely Planet, "Valladolid, also known as the Sultaness of the East, Yucatan's third largest city is known for its quiet streets ... read more

The last two days were just travel from Valladolid to Merida, orienting, and grocery shopping. We just hung out in Valladolid at the hostel killing time, sweating in the heat until our afternoon bus. We've found arriving too early at a hostel is more annoying than leaving one late; your bed might not be ready, and they might not have a great way to store your luggage if you want to go wander about in the new place until you can check in. Today we found our way to the main square in town. It was nice to just sit and chat there. We were told that many of the things around the square were free to see, but hadn't really planned on going in to much. There were information plaques scattered about town and we ... read more

Chichen Itza on vajaan tunnin bussimatkan paassa Valladolidista. Herasin klo 6.30 ja kerkesin klo 8.15 lahtevaan bussiin, sita ennen aamupala. Reppuun vetta, aurinkorasvaa ja sateenvarjo. Kuvat puhukoot puolestaan kohteesta. Siella vierahti kolmisen tuntia. Paluu oli colectivolla. Kavin kahteen otteeseen hotellin uima-altaassa. Nukuin pitkaan. Bussi lahti klo 12.40. Maisema oli yksitoikkoista: tasaista ja pelkkaa metsaa. Sen puoleen oli hyva etta bussissa naytettiin leffoja. Valladolidissa hotelli Zaci on ihan bussiaseman vieressa. Huoneen tallelokero vain ei ollut kaytossa. Piti jattaa arvotavarat respaan. Kavin katsomassa paikallista cenotea eli veden tayttamaa onkaloa. Rauhallinen pikkukaupunki. Ajoissa nukkumaan, jotta paasee huomenna aikaisin kohti Chichen Itzaa.... read more
