My friend "Hammockman" Paul Rounds has put up a post at his blog about our November visit to Jim Conrad of BackyardNature.net . I'll now supplement that post with a few additional photos and recollections. Being only a junior-blogger wannabe, and newcomer, I felt it appropriate to let Paul break this story first; and he's done a fine job. He blogs from Merida, and can be found at HammockmanPaul.blogspot.com . I've enjoyed Jim's newsletter for about a year, and found my way to it through Paul's sidebar of blogs which he follows. I was an avid reader of Thoreau when in high school. So it was compelling for me to make an effort to visit someone who was living like that 19th century contrarian in the modern age. And I wasn't disappointed. Jim has a spiritual ... read more

Well, I have finally left Yamba, don’t think I have ever cried as much! The whole of the last week was lovely, people just turning up at the door to say goodbye and bringing me little presents of an egg or a mango, one boy Jeremiah even brought me a Guinea Fowl. The school held a huge party for us with choirs, a band (with homemade guitar and amplifier!) dancing and so many speeches. Francis, the head boy at the school read out a letter from all the kids thanking me and Linda, we were both crying in no time! We couldn’t believe how much effort had gone into the party, the children had decorated the school with garlands of flowers and they had written songs and even a rap for us. It was touching that ... read more

We decided that we would visit one more Mayan ruin before we headed towards the east coast for some beach time. A small ruin near Valladolid was recommended to us so in the morning we caught a taxi to Ek Balam. The site was partially restored with some nice buildings including a huge pyramid with sweeping views of the entire site. There were also two huge ruins on either site of the main site. These ruins were apparently temples but looked just like big piles of rocks with vegetation growing all over it. This really helped us appreciate the effort and skill it must have taken in restoring the sites we have seen over the past few days. After returning to Valladolid we hired bikes for the afternoon in order to ride out to a natural ... read more

Today was a day of transport, a flight followed by a bumpy car trip to Valladolid on the Yutacan Peninsula. The Yutacan peninsula is probably the most frequented part of Mexico for tourists since it is home to gorgeous beaches (Cancun) as well as Mayan temples. Given our limited time, we decided to forgo the Mayan sightseeing in favor of seeing those in Guatemala, and instead, devote our little time to driving around the Yutacan to see small town Mexican life. We landed at Cancun airport early afternoon, and picked up our Avis rental. Car hire is expensive in Mexico, with lots of hidden taxes, so do make sure you check all the fine print. We first headed into Cancun to book our bus tickets to Guatemala for 2 days later, and also grabbed a quick ... read more

Ola, Vandaag opnieuw in Valladolid beland. ... read more

THURSDAY 26TH FEBRUARY Here I am sitting in another airport terminal, reflecting on another adventure over. Mexico was fantastic! We met so many fantastic people and did some really cool stuff. This trip was supposed to be just one big layover, but ended up being a bit of a blowout! The cheap food and beer was too much of a temptation so indulging was very easy. The $2 beers were cold and were sold wherever you went, so they were in my hand more than I would have liked, but whatever….. I almost feel like I’m going back to work for some reason. Back to the big smoke now and back to Bruce and some hard core road tripping! Well, let’s reflect on the last few days in the old, dusty Mexico. On Friday we were ... read more

Well, I am back in North America! Mexico anyways :) December 31st turned out to be a beautiful day, and I really enjoyed spending it with Megan. We had lunch at a cute cafe south of the hostel, enjoying the two-for-one special on the pina coladas ;) After we got our errands done and had lunch, we headed off in search of the Cake Lady. The Cake Lady is this marvellous woman who bakes cakes in the morning, and sells them from a push cart in the afternoon and early evening. She makes all kinds of cakes and pies - key lime, coconut and chocolate pies, and chocolate fudge cake, with chocolate or caramel icing. There are also brownies! She sells them for 4-5 Belize dollars, or about $2-$2.50 USD. They are so delicious, that I ... read more

The flight to Cancun was uneventful, we filled up two forms on the plane customs and immigration cards, with strict instructions from the crew that if we lose them we pay $50 for a new one, so i was careful not to misplace it. The immigration in Cancun is very quick, it was customs that took time. From there i bought a shuttle bus ticket to downtown bus station then crossed the street of the bus station and waited for buses that has a sign going to Punta Juarez where I can catch a freey to Isla Mujeres. The kind driver dropped me off at the ferry dock, the only other passenger pointed to where i should head down,"por ayi" he said and off I go. Bought my ferry ticket and hopped on the ferry, tooka ... read more
