Before going to Valladolid, we went to Chichen Itzá. This is the most famous, or at least the most touristic archaeological site of Yucatan. There are mayan temples and some cenotes (not for swimming). It always amazes me how we people walk around those "bunch of stones" while they meant so much to the people back then. They built these temples so precisely, taking the sun, the moon, the stars, the days of the year and much more in consideration. After Chichen Itzá, we took the bus to Valladolid where we booked a hostel (la Candelaria) for a few nights. On tuesday we went to Tizimin to visit Vanessa, Leandro and Ainoah. They were here on holidays, visiting her parents. We had some food and then her brother brought us to a town nearby: Kikil. There ... read more

Daniel lähti käymään Chichen Itzassa. Sunnuntaisin meksikolaiset pääsevät noihin arkeologisiin kohteisiin ilmaiseksi. Illalla suklaamuseo ja ruokailu tähtitaivaan alla.... read more

Oli vuorossa bussimatka Valladolidiin. Hotelli on lähellä asemaa. Käytiin museossa, vilkaistiin cenotea, joka on monttu jonka pohjalla on vettä. Ostettiin ruokaa hotellin jääkaappiin, välipala. Iltakävelyllä kasvispasta ja uskonnollinen kulkue.... read more

Valladolid on mukavan rauhallinen ja historiallinen kaupunki.... read more

Our first stop after Cancun was Valladolid (nope, you don't say it how it looks), a super lovely town about 30 minutes from Chichen Itza. The hostel was a bit like Narnia - entering through the front which looked out over a plaza in town, but the it went back forever with outside bathrooms, hammocks and the kitchen and seating area! On the first morning we hired bikes and cycled 30km round the surrounding area, visiting 3 cenotes (sink holes or caves with water for swimming in). The first was full of bats, the second was underneath Tekom's main plaza and was crystal clear with just one beam of light from above, and the final one was fully open to the sky with lots of tiny fish that nibble your feet! The next day we visited ... read more

We headed out to Valladolid next so that a day trip to Chichen Itza would be less of an ordeal and we could get there earlier; before all the crowds and day trippers from the Cancun area showed up. Once again we took the ADO bus service. The ride was shorter again than what we thought, which is good as long as you're paying attention. As our bus wound its way through tiny streets we at first didn't realize we had reached our destination. A quick hop to Hostel del Fraile from the bus stop and we were checked into our MXN130 per night dorm room. We were quickly given a map by Victor, highlighting the supermarket, food Bazaar, city cenote, and other important sites. He let us know that he was running a bike tour ... read more

Last night after the blog was published, we decided to get milkshakes. Found a good spot on the edge of Pargue Francisco. The park was lit up, and two church towers in the background were lit. Just beautiful. Wish we could get our photos into the Kindle. Found out this morning that Valladolid is an hour earlier than Cancun. Got up a little earlier than necessary. Got hot water immediately for showers, which is unusual here. Then we saw that the hot water heater was right next to our bathroom. After coffee and good bakery items for our included breakfast, we rented bikes at the hostel. Biked to a couple of cenotes, Samula and Dzitnup. The bikes were pretty old and one speed, but the ride was fairly flat. We followed a couple of back streets ... read more

After a yogurt and fruit breakfast included with our hotel stay, we headed to the bus depot. We purchased our tickets to Valladolid yesterday, $8(US) per person. Bus left on time at 9:45. All the bus employees seemed very happy, always smiling, very helpful. Two others got on the bus at the depot. But slow getting out of Cancun, many stops. Lots of oranges for sale along the road. Faster once we hit the highway. Many bicycles with several passengers in front in the small towns along the highway. Several garden shops with potted plants and trees for sale. People have more of a Mayan look here. In 3.5 hours, we were in Valladolid. From Lonely Planet, "Valladolid, also known as the Sultaness of the East, Yucatan's third largest city is known for its quiet streets ... read more

Nukuin pitkaan. Bussi lahti klo 12.40. Maisema oli yksitoikkoista: tasaista ja pelkkaa metsaa. Sen puoleen oli hyva etta bussissa naytettiin leffoja. Valladolidissa hotelli Zaci on ihan bussiaseman vieressa. Huoneen tallelokero vain ei ollut kaytossa. Piti jattaa arvotavarat respaan. Kavin katsomassa paikallista cenotea eli veden tayttamaa onkaloa. Rauhallinen pikkukaupunki. Ajoissa nukkumaan, jotta paasee huomenna aikaisin kohti Chichen Itzaa.... read more

Our Arrival The bus from Merida dropped us off at the bus station in town on calle 39 and calle 46. Where We Stayed Hostel de Huespedes - calle 39 and calle 48. M$180 for a double room with bathroom and TV. Internet worked in reception area. The whole place was pretty grubby and there was a dirty kitchen which could be used but no fridge. However it seemed to be the cheapest place in town and the room was large. What We Did VISITED CENOTES Cenote Zaci - in town on calle 37 and 34. M$25 admission. A half open cenote with swimming. Cenote Samula - out of town on the way to Dzitnup. We walked there and it took about 1 1/4hrs on a path running alongside the highway. There are also colectivos that ... read more
