[youtube=mt_M_pz_NsU][youtube=61tY9LZWPYo]The road trip started at the revised hour of 9am. The route we were taking was called 'Ruta Puuc' which is a circuit of Mayan sites in the Puuc region, close to Merida where we were staying.

As we were picking up the car, another traveller was dropping his back who had visited similar ruins. He highly recommended one which was not on our original agenda, Mayapan. With the journey changed, we headed off with Daniel driving and Chris navigating... much to Natalie’s relief as she wasn’t confident she would have navigated us out of town!

Our first stop was Mayapan, thought to have been founded around 1000 AD, and the site recommended by the bloke in the rental shop. We arrived to an empty site, except for a local Mayan guy who was on top of the main pyramid blowing a conch shell as part of some ritual. We watched him for a while, not wanting to climb the pyramid while his ritual was taking place in case it brought us bad luck! We were very impressed by our first Mayan ruins, although these have been restored, and spent an hour and a half wandering and admiring the

site from all angles. It is amazing to think that these sites were originally built without the use of metal tools, only a type of hard stone tool.
