By coincidence, I already had a week long trip to Merida, Mexico with my aunt and uncle planned before I won my work trip to Aruba and luckily they were right in a row. Two weeks away from the cold and snow of South Elgin is just what I need!
My room at the airport hotel included breakfast. I was disappointed to learn the free breakfast did not include juice. How can you be in Florida and not have fresh orange juice with your breakfast??? I paid for it….
The room had no view and was pretty boring so I checked out and headed to the terminal at 9 for my 12:30 flight. The security line was short and I was quickly back in terminal D, where I again was about as far from my gate as I could be. Luckily Miami has the SkyTrain which loops around the terminal and I used that to get down to the gate 8 area. I had plenty of time before my flight to people watch and read. And then the flight was delayed so I had even more time! We finally boarded and took off, arriving in Merida at 3 instead
of 1:50. The line for immigration moved quickly but customs took forever because there was only one guy. And of course I got the red light and had to have my bags scanned. Finally I was through and out to the arrival area where my aunt and uncle were waiting. A short taxi ride later we were to the Airbnb.
The place we are staying has two rooms. My aunt and uncle are staying in the casita and have been here for a week already. My room is in the main house, on the second floor and feels like being in a tree house. There is the bedroom and a tiny room with the toilet. Then there is an enclosed balcony area with a shower, hammock and chairs. I’ve always wanted to have an outdoor shower! I unpacked, changed and then we headed out for dinner.
We ate at Picheta which I would describe as a fancy restaurant but the prices were not fancy, once I figured out what the pesos translated to in dollars. We sat on the rooftop overlooking the square. It was a beautiful view. I had some delicious chicken in a cranberry sauce with
couscous and veggies. For dessert we had a cream puff filled with black sapote. This fruit is a member of the persimmon family and it truly is black. It tasted kind of like a sweet potato. We also had a bitter orange sorbet, which was also delicious!
There was a lot going on in the square, music, dancing, vendors selling all kids of things. We wandered around the governor’s palace and sat in the square for a while. This time of year is warm in Merida but it was a rather cool evening and people were wearing long sleeves and jackets. I was in my shorts and a tshirt.
After a long day of travel the outdoor shower was very refreshing and I was ready for bed.
