Another early start since we are visiting the only sight in El Fuerte - the Bosque Secreto (Secret Forest). This is a large part of the only remaining dry tropical forest left in North America. The weather is already hot and humid at 7.30am, but overcast. Equipped with long trousers, hats and long-sleeved shirts to defeat the bugs, we are warm before leaving our air con room. The tour, as advertised, was by boat followed by a bit of walking. In the event the river water level is too low for a boat so we were offered kayaks instead. I am keen to give it a go but Ian point blank refuses. He claims that his ability to fall into water is too great a risk. A compromise is reached and it is decided that we ... read more

Travelled today to arrive in El Fuerte a small city where the Indians and Spaniards fought it out in the 1600s.El Fuerte is now made up of Indians Spanish and crossbreds. In this town there were many rich. One of which the Character Zoro was born. After the death of his Mother he fled to California to steal from the rich to give to the poor. A legend that still holds hope and value in this country. We went on a river tour to see many unique birds and see the past culture. They are very big on nature medicines made from natural plants. We studied the carvings from the original Indians. The Chewie dog thinks he loves it here. He rides on the bus, goes to restaurants., boat rides and is loved by everyone.... read more

After 14hrs + of travel and a transit through the US (always painful), we arrived in Chihuahua, Mexico and we drew the short straw when Scott’s bag was ‘chosen’ to be searched. After finding nothing of interest we were on our way to a cute little hotel and rather than the usual washing of car windows at the traffic lights we were treated to some fire dancing entertainment - great! Through a haze of tiredness we headed out for a quick dinner, whist looking for a recommendation we stumbled across a local place serving cold margaritas and good local fare outside, while a live duo sung some great traditional numbers. A fitting start to our 2 week Mexican adventure! We were up super early the next morning but considering we were really still on London time ... read more

SORRY THERE ARE NOT MAPS NOT SURE WHY Wednesday, February 7, 2007. Today’s drive involved leaving Sonora State and entering the state of Sanoloa. We expected some inspection to check our paper work—nothing. The guard just waved us through. After settling in El Fuerte, we took off for a walk to the old town and visited the fort/museum. This campground in El Fuerte is where we will leave the Bothan and travel by train to Creel and on to Batopilas, the bottom of the Copper Canyon. “Bill” of El Fuerte, is one care-free/slick dude. He runs the hotel, as a hunters destination and is available as a guide. Then behind the hotel he has a RV park, where he collect full charges for folks traveling to Copper Canyon (People are not using any services yet he ... read more

Pressing the “send” button was the last task my computer performed before hitting melt- down. It had been developing strange and erratic behaviour and is now well & truly kaput. Circuit Board history I guess. Originally Graeme was keen to wait to get home before purchasing another, due to potential import & warranty problems etc, but a few days of pestering to use his has soon changed all that. We need to be a two computer family again ASAP Our journey back up through Mexico began by heading along the Eastern coastline where the road runs parallel to the coast for many miles. At one point there are 3 islands, which are now connected by 2 long bridges, and often there is the ocean on one side and a lagoon on the other. Travelling along ... read more

The fuller version... Wednesday 29th June - Long haul to Los Mochis Another slow morning, making the most of the hostel before catching the early afternoon bus to Los Mochis. A long journey, initially a few hours through sparsely-populated scrub to Durango just before nightfall. We were going to stay in Durango to visit the Wild West film sets but they are only open at weekends. After Durango the night falls and the road gets wilder and wilder. It is difficult to sleep with the winding nature of the mountain roads across the Sierra Madre Occidentale to Mazatlan on the coast. Shame we did not see any of it. Thursday 30th June - Mochis to El Fuerte We arrive in Los Mochis at something like 08:30, we had expected to arrive at 0600 but the buses ... read more
