The border wall
The border on the Tijuana side So, today we finally arrived in Mexico! We woke up early and got our lives in order. After our goodbyes and thank yous (very well deserved!) Noah took us to the Tijuana airport. We drove right through the border with no problems. Barely even slowed down at the border! Noah took us through Tijuana and with all due respect, it looks like a great big sprawling Arab town. A little bit of a disappointment, even though we really didn't have any expectations.
We were forewarned about the inefficiencies and shenanigans at the airport in Mexico, but we got through the whole thing in less than 20 minutes! Put our suitcase at the check-in, zipped through security and to the gates in no time. The airport itself is undergoing some serious face lifting so lots of areas were closed off. That added a couple minutes to the time it took to find our gate. Then they changed our gate from 12 to 1, but we already knew where that was.
We got something to eat at a stand there. The stand opened for about 15 minutes - the time it took for all the food to sell out! Tamar got
a chicken sandwich and I got beef. Both were very nice.
Our gate changed again a couple more times, but just from 1A to 1B and back (we ended up boarding at gate 1B). We boarded with no problem and the flight took off on time. I was a little worried that we wouldn't make our connection, but I shouldn't have. We landed just a few minutes late at Mexico City, but the walk from the plane to our next departure gate was quick and we had time to get something to eat. We exchanged some money to Mexican Pesos at the airport, so we'd at least have
some pesos.
Boarding the plane to Cancun was even easier than the one from Tijuana. Boarding started half an hour before take off, and there was no lineup. We just walked right through to the plane.
We landed in Cancun a little before 9PM and went to find transportation. We opted for a shuttle around the hotel area before dropping us off at our hotel, but we had to wait for other travelers to fill the shuttle. After a 20 minute wait we were about to give up and
find a taxi (much more expensive), but they gave up first and just drove us to our hotel - at shuttle cost. So we lucked out there too. Cool.
The hotel looks a bit shabby on the outside, but it's clean, there's hot water and comfy beds, and it's located in the center of town. The people are friendly and despite the language barrier they try their best to help. Works for us.
So, tomorrow we'll go exchange some cash at a better rate than the airport, rent a car and go to Coba and the cenotes nearby.
Note to self: next time, exchange your dollars to pesos in the US! The rates are better. But exchange pesos to USD at the Cancun airport...
