Sittting at Teotihuacan
Contompliting the fact we just climbed the third highest pyrimid in the world in the midday sun. Hola from tequila filled Mexico. so here I am on my last continent before home, sadly not long left now. It all started in Mexico City, although people say its dirty and smoggy, I really liked it. Its a fun and lively city with so much going on, buts of it were even pretty and could even be likened in my mind to Buenos Aires. After checking in to a wicked little hostel with a crazy barman that apparently it didn't matter if you don't like tequila he would still poor it down your throat, a group of us got together and head for Teotihuacan ruins, just outside the city. This involved the first of many steps to be claimed, including the third highest in the world, only after Egypt. There ruins where pretty cool, but the lunch we had was even better, my first introduction to Mexican food yum! After more tequila that night, well when in Rome, I was introduced to the tacos, not exactly Old El Paso! It was a good thing I was petty drunk as After looking at the meat I was all "that's disgusting, I feel for whoever has to eat that" he handed it
Just another road block
The police working hard in Oxaca. to me, and it tasted great. I managed to fit in a tour of the city before heading off to Oaxaca (pronouched ohaka) the traffic leaving the city was amazing, even on a weekend morning it still took an hour to get out the city.
On arrival I met up with some friends (they redeemed the French on the Inca trail) and went for another wicked meal where you order meat by the kilo and make your own fajitas, bliss. Oaxaca has been having a few problems recently, the teachers have all been protesting over pay, the situation is solved know but the evidence of the protests where still prominent. There where police road blocks all around the Zocalo (main square), but admittedly doing very little just making a strange juxtaposition to the kiddies all playing there Sunday morning. That night was another big protest over the government form what I could work out. So it would seem its the place to go if you like a good protest.
Beach time next, off to Pueto Escondido and to the small surfer hangout of Zicatela. The waves where too big to swim so much time was
Jelous?
Playa Cazzarillo, where I had a busy few days spent at playa cazzarillo or chilling in the hammock, tough life. Sadly dragged myself away from the beach to head inland for the colonial and revolutionary twin of San Cristobal De Las Casas, a real shock to the system a sleeping bag and two blankets still couldn't keep you warm in theses cold highlands. I visited a couple of the local Mayan villages which are still very traditional, and made the best hand made tortillas. We went to the famous San Juan Chamula, with a very famous ´church´. The whole village is crazy, the women who are in charge have made it against the law to take any photos and I didn't fancy messing with the woollen clad ladies as a small child tried to walk in front of them and got hit with a broom! The church is famed for the people drinking Coca Cola and using it as an offering to their God. They also use chickens as offerings and pass them over the sick and them sacrifice them to see if they have taken the illness out of the patient. All this goes on with local men asleep on the pine needle coverd floor with thousands of
Hammaca
Hammoch life in Zicalta, tough! candals left sanding around, I swear big fire hazard.
On the move again and to the Mayan ruins in the jungle at Pelenque, with a few stops on route at some water falls, including Aquas Azule for a dip in the clear blue waters. After a visit to the ruins was over I hot footed it to the Caribbean coast, skipping Cancun for then backpacker version of Isla Mujeres just of the coast. Still a few large Americanos but all in all a very nice chilled place with warm clear blue water that you could walk out for miles in. It was my introduction to the apparently common beds on the beach they have in Mayan Riviera, all very strange, is it just me who's happy with a bit of sand? After visiting the turtle farm, all very cute but a bit sad to see them crammed in, I saw some in the wild as I stated my scuba diving tour, well its been a while. So after a few chilled nights in too many beach bars I head for Playa Del Carmen to meet some friends (how glad am I that all the Argentines are on summer
The 'church' in San Jan Chamula
Weirdest chuch Ive ever been in, poor chickens holidays!) I had a brief stop on the way to experience Cancun, what a culture shock BIG hotels and BIG malls. Scary, little America with Maccy D´s, Hooters and TGI Fridays, you cant even sit on the beach all day the hotels block the sun out at 3! I'm a backpacker Get me outta here!!
So to Playa and more diving, I finished off my advanced course of scuba diving (started in the Gilli Islands) which was good fun and good timing as the sun was on Holiday. I also went over to Cozumel, and island just off the coast for world class diving. The coral was simply suburb and the fish where huge.
As the sun wasn't playing along I tired further south in Tulum, where there is a really pretty Set of ruins on the beach. Sadly lots of big American tourists and no sun, so I decided to leave. Not before some friends convinced me to dive in one of the Cenotoes that are all over the Yucatan peninsular. They are big cave like holes they are full of stalactites and stalagmites from the limestone that drips the crystal clear waters through. Wicked
fun all dark and mysterious, with bits of daylight shining into the cave every now and then. A good way to spend my last day, the last night wasn't quite as good, we, me and a Dutchie Micheal that I met diving, spent the night near the border with Belize in Chetamal a real nothing town that the lights exploded as I walked out the bus station, well I am electric!
So time in Mexico was over and oh how I miss the food....
