We left Washington DC on a direct flight to Cancun in flip-flops and light sweaters, in anticipation for our Mexico trip. As we landed, I went straight to the exchange counter to get our Pesos, since I expected hotels to be offering a lower exchange rate. I changed $200 USD at an American Express counter and got a gift of a pair of sunglasses for the grand rate of $10.40 pesos per dollar. That was the lowest rate ever, as rates averaged $12.6 p in the market with even the hotels offering $11.5 up.
Picked up our rental and drove the 45 mins to Playa del Carmen from Cancun airport. Roads are good, signs are prominent, very tourist friendly. Our resort - Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda was an all-inclusive. Food buffets available all day, with fine dining at restaurants in the complex, through reservation in the nights. We were located by the pool and the room was very nice. Everyday, they'd leave a cute animal made of towels on the bed.
