From the Air
Leaving Newark Airport Ok, so maybe it was a bunk bed , and I was on the top bunk, he on the bottom. That was my first night in Cancun.
In NY,I left my house at 6 in the morning and took a cab to Newark Airport in New Jersey. For those of you who don´t already know I occasionally suffer from motion sickness. Mainly of the automobile kind. And city busses. Very rarely do I take a city bus. If a train can´t get me there, I ain´t goin´. The cab driver wasn´t a crazy driver, nonetheless I got sick. Maybe because I didn´t sleep at night and broke day doing some last minute packing, but by the time we got tothe airport I was holding in my vomit. But as soon as I pad the man I ran tfor the neaest bathroom!
Newark is a pretty small airport, nothing compared to JFK. The flight was pretty uneventful, except for the taking off and landing part. If you want to see a black person go white, just watch my face as we´re taking off and landing. I hate direct flights. To me it´s just unnatural for a plane to be in
the air the whole time. Call me crazy, but next time, I´ll stick to my layovers. The good thing was I hads a whole row to myself!!
Ahhhh, Cancun. I definitley was not planning on staying here at all. Cancun seemed like a really touristed area from what other people told me. So my plan was to skip >Cancun and straight to on of the outer islands. But fate had something else in mind.
We landed at 12:30pm and I ran to get my heavy ass backpack from the luggage turnstile, then I turned the corner... and saw the long ass lines to customs. I wanted to scream. But just as I was about to open my mouth and curse Cancun, a short brown Mexican customs agent opened a side door for me and whispered¨"pssst, come here meees". Then he pointed to a customs agent that was just opening up and I was home free. Walking out of the airport, I was approached by a million agents trying to get me to rent a car, or take one of thier overpriced vans to a hotel. Then a bus agent told me of the bus company he worked for who
The beaches of Cancun
To all of you who are freezing in the NY weather, don´t feel jealous, it was really windy, with no sun. could take me to downtown Cancun, for $3.50, so I thought why not stay for a night.
Cancun is seperated into two. There is the hotel district which is along he beach. Some of the most famous and expensive hotels are situated here, the Hilton, Marriot, etc. All tourists stay here, most of hem anyway. Because my budget is so limited, I opted for the cheaper Cancun, Downtown Cancun. Here´s where the difference lies. Although there are tourists, it is mostly the Mexicans who live here. I´m surrounded by short brown people. Downtown Cancun is sort of the real Mexico.
I took the bus to downtown Cancun and go off in the middle of he central area. I was lost. I knew the name of the hostel I wanted to stay in, but had nop idea where it was. A small Mexican approached me and asked if I needed help. i asked him about the Hostel, but he had another one in mind. He told me to follow him. Yeah, ok then take me to an alley and do ungodly things with me, forget that. But then he insisted and since I was jetlagged and tired , I
followed. He took me to a small family owned hostel called Mayan Hostel. It was small with two rooms with nine bunk beds for $10 a night. The family consisted of an elderly mother and father and their 28 year old son, Billy. The mother showed me where I would be sleeping, then I saw the Italian. There were also nine other people, who were all from different countries, Norway, England, Australia.
About an hour after I settled in, I asked Billy how to get to the famous Cancun beach. Since I was downtown, they told me to hail a bus. Hail a bus? Don´t you mean hail a cab? No , here you hail a bus. He walked me to the corner and when he saw a bus coming he yelled "Stop that bus!" I flung my arm out, almost dislocating it, scared by how he yelled it to me, and about to cuss him out when the bus stopped directly in front of me. I got on and payed the man 6 pesos, which is about 60 cents and took a long ride to the beaches.
The Zona Hotelera is Mexico´s Las Vegas. There are dozens
Vegas, I mean Cancun
The Hard Rock Cafe, which was next top a Burger King, which was next to a McDonalds, whic was next to a Subways....need I say more? of shops, McDonalds, Starbucks, Burger Kings, whatever you think of they have it. Americanized isn´t the word to describe it, more like it´s a lost part od Vegas. I went to the beach and stuck my foot in. It´s a little bit chilly around 70 degrees, but better than NY weather right now. I went to grab some dinner, then made my way back to the hostel. But, again, fate stepped in. I got lost.
I found my way back like a trooper, though . I walked into an internet cafe to see if I can call home. No one answered so I was walked back to the hostel. Such a funny thing about fate because I was walking, I was shitted on by a bird. Thanks Cancun, thanks. They say it´s good luck. Too bad good luck stinks, and smells like, well....shit. I tried running to the hostel but was stopped by a man who kept yelling for me to stop. Is it illegal to run in Cancun? No it was a nice Belizean man trying to get my attention. He came over and introduced himself, he seemed nice enough so I told him my real name. Then I calmly explained I that I was just shitted on by a bird, and would lke to go to my room and wash it off. Oh but he had other plans. I think he ignored what I said and kept talking. Ask me about what, who the hell knows. After about ten minutes my shirt started to smell really badly, so he gave me his phone number and told me if I was ever in Belize, to call him beause he knows hotel managers, yeah right.
I went back to the hostel and washed off my shirt. Then I went to sit on the patio of the hotel. 3 guys, 2 mexican and one british, were sitting there drinking. They offered me a drink and invited me out to a club in Cancun´s hotel district. After mulling it over for a minute, I went.
We went to a club called Coco Bongo, which is the most popular club in all of Cancun. You pay 40 bucks and it´s open bar all night. They had elaborate performances with people impersonating everyone from Beyonce to Madonna. I had the best time , if you want more details email me.
I hailed a cab back to the hostel, but the cab driver offered to buy me breakfast. It was around 6:30am. I went because I thought he would geive me a cheaper fare, and he did. I ate an authentic mexican enchilada. It was slammin. Then he took me to my hostel.
He quoted the price and asked for a kiss.
I said have a nice day.
I ended up staying two more nights in Cancun. I lounged around quite a bit. I´ll be leaving tomorrow for Isla Mujeres, one of the outer islands.
Until next Blog.
Peace
