Hotel Monte Alban
This is our hotel located right on the Zacolo. The hotel was built for the Bishop and was at one time one of the most important houses in Oaxaca. A very hostorical building and has been in the current owners family for over 50 years. Nothing fancy but the rooms are large and clean. You cannot beat the location if you want to be in the heart of things. Home Sweet Home! I love to travel but I alway's love coming home. We had a busy trip and a bad internet connection so waited to finish the blog. The trip in total was 9 days with two of them mostly travel so we really tried to cram a lot into our days without feeling like we were rushing through like crazy turists. For me it is as important when visiting a place to not only see the highlights of the area but to also get a sense of the city or area your visiting. Watching a city come awake and checking out places they are eating and just meeting people who live there. So whether your talking to a Taxi driver, waiter or someone at the hotel desk take a moment to just ask about something that pertains to them and the life they live right there, maybe a favorite food to try or their favorite markets their family just something a little more personal and I believe that you will get a better feeling of the way of life.
I wore a pedometer the whole time and averaged about 8 to 10 miles a day just walking the
Inside Hotel Monte Alban
Every night they have a dance troupe come in and perform many different traditional folklore dances this is called a Guelaguetza. They changed costues many times but this was all I got? Must have been to caaught up in the whole dance streets, markets and Parks of Oaxaca city. The one thing that I will forever associate with Oaxaca is the small of Chocolate. They really adore their chocolate Moles and Hot Chocolate with Pan Dulce in the mornings. They have places all over that are grinding the cocoa beans into all the different styles they carry. The food of Oaxaca to me is some of the best in Mexico. We ate at many comedors located in the markets instead of some of the restaurants that were focused on Travelers dollars and rich locals. We had some of the best food and a few not so great meals but not only is it much cheaper but often much fresher because they do it in small batches. Morning was started with yes you guessed it Hot Chocolate served in small bowls to dip your sweet bread into it or one of my favorite sweets a cinnamon sugar dusted Churro ( a long this fried dough). Depending where you are in Mexico they serve them filled with cream, jelly or plan but Oaxaca does something extra special like dipping them 2/3 into yes chocolate! Truly decadent and only on occasion for the most part
Frida's Cocina
I had been to this popular comedor at a market about 30 minutes from Oaxaca. Her and her mother have had this stall for a total of 50 years, The daughter looked so mush like Frida she dresses like her everyday. She was a delightful woman and though eh knew her picure has been in many papers around the world I don't think she knew how famous she was. Her food is so delicious and I loved it just as much this time as I did 5 years ago when I first went to her place. Funny thing is that she said even though thousands had passed through she remembered me! the plain ones were my favorites. Besides th Comedors we ate a few main meals in the middle of the day where places offer a Comida Corrida which is typically 3 course meal that is fixed for a very good price and fresh as they do a different one everyday. So if your really looking for some real authentic food these are the places to try.
I have lots of pictures so I am just going to post and tell the rest of my trip through pictures and captions.
