We had to leave PV a day early, since they mistakenly told us we had a room for Saturday night at our hotel...so...
We packed, did some shopping, said goodbye to Susan, and found a cab willing to drive us to Lo de Marcos for $50 (an hour and a half drive)...the cabbie we hired had never been this far north before...!
Our camera died that morning too, so I am using the Nexus for photos, which is hard because the camera is on the screen side with no view finder, so I have to guess what I'm photographing...
We found our hotel (our second choice, since we had not heard not heard from our first, the Caracol). We were checked in by a meth addict-looking young man, and our room, while full of sunlight (you could get a tan on the toilet) was small and cramped....We were considering staying until the smokers just below us lit up and the smoke funneled up the airshaft and directly into our room. The smokers were part of the French-Canadian snow-birders, and wouldn't be moving, so we did the next day.
However, Saturday night was great fun. We saw people
decorating the plaza for a fiesta when we drove by, and found out there was to be a benefit for the local folkdance troupe, co-sponsored by the ex-pat community and the town. We bought tickets to the festivities, and greatly enjoyed our evening conversing with a group of French-Canadians (It is a real test of my brain to speak French while in Mexico....), and watching great folk-dancing. One troupe was professional (they will tour Russia next month) and the other was the fledging troupe from Lo de Marcos.
Near the end of dinner, one of the Canadians leaned over and asked us how exactly we had
ever heard of this town! (It's not in our guide book, so she had a point...) We explained that we had learned of Lo de Marcos from Canadians we met in Guadalajara...
We walked down to the Caracol before breakfast, and booked a suite for the next 3-7 days....it's more pesos than the first hotel, but well worth it: large room with a kitchen and 4 closets, and sliders out the large, private beachfront patio...bed is smaller, and the walk to town much longer...but best of all, no smoking on the grounds!
As this was Sunday, the beach hosted many Mexican families playing in the water and on the sand...
On Monday we woke up to a high tide and big waves...probably from the storm that hit California....I did my usual run to the far end of the beach, and the waves were washing across the whole beach and into the lagoon....one was almost thigh deep! By the time we went to breakfast, the waves were washing into the restaurants and right under our table! (The restaurants are on the sand, and we were barefoot...so big deal).
Tonight we walked through the giant complex of Tlaqueplaque Trailer Park and Hotel, and ate at the restaurant there: all-you-can-eat veggie pizza and mojitos for $6.00 each... After buying tequila, juice, and potatoes, we headed back to the Caracol via back lanes in the almost dark, past cows and horses, and children playing...
We are staying here until Sunday, when we could get a good flight home. Betty, our cat, is seriously declining in health, and we hope to get back to Seattle (where she is staying with our wonderful friends Vicki and Geoff), while she is still alive...
