Looking up the Avenue of Death
The name of the avenue comes from the Aztecs who thought the pyramids were tombs. This avenue is 2 miles long. Today we took a bus to Teotihuacan (tay-oh-tea-wa-kahn). It’s one of the most popular places to visit. We toured the ruins of a civilization that lived there 2,000 years ago, before the Aztecs. When the Aztecs came upon the ruins, hundreds of years after the people who had built them were gone, they thought they were the remains of a city of the gods, mistaking the pyramids for tombs. That’s why they named the major thoroughfare the Avenue of the Dead. The Temple of the Sun is the third largest pyramid in the world. It took about 15 minutes to walk up to the top. The steps are narrow and steep. Once we got to the top, the view was great. It was a long day though, and it was good to get home.
Weather report:
I hear that the weather at home, in Maryland, has been hot and dry. I hope it gets better soon. The weather here is what I would describe as unsettled. We were definitely affected by Hurricane Alex (?). Lots of rain the first week. Unsettled weather is typical for most of Central Mexico and Central America. Sunny and warm one minute, cool the next.
Drizzle, pouring rain and thunderstorms alternate with clear skies. You can’t plan for it. You just have to carry an umbrella at all times. If you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes; it will change.
