THE LAST EMAIL FROM MEXICO!!!
Well, I´m done with finals (I think I did well...except for history...). Now I´m just packing up and enjoying the last 24 hours here. Nothing really eventful has happened here, except that I went to a soccer game Sunday night:
4 guys from my program and I decided to go to the Monarcas vs. Pumas game - we aren´t very good and the Pumas are number 3 in the league. Nevertheless I got all dressed up in red and yellow (our colors), bought my spiced salty peanuts outside (my favorite snack here), my giant beer inside, and sat down to enjoy the game. Before the game all the sponsors have girls dress up in the sponsors attire (a sexy version) holding banners and parade around the field...quite interesting. Once the game got started the Pumas were definitely dominating although we had good interceptions and breakaways. It was 0-0 until the second to last minute, and then WE SCORED!!!! It was WAY exciting. AND at the bottom of my beer (because they poured it into a cup) there was a 10 peso coin (=1 US dollar). I guess it fell in while exchanging money. I
was a little grossed out, but hey, a dollar richer! Anyways, everyone was going crazy at the end because we beat the #3 team, it was great!
Well, if you´ve been missing the obervations sections, don´t fear, they´ve been piling up in my notebook... -there are cockroaches here...most of them try to climb up walls, fall on their backs, and die from not being able to turn over.
-on all the junk food commercials here, the government puts "eat well" on the bottom of the screen. or if the commercial is for shaving, the govt. puts "watch water consumption" at the bottom...the U.S. should adopt this.
-children talk and read earlier here because Spanish sounds are easier to pronounce. English is hard...remember those R´s and L´s when you were 4?
-minimum wage is $5...a DAY, for 8 hours. I can understand why so many families host foreign students because it´s a good way to make money. For a lot of moms (like mine), their main job is hosting students, and they make about $18 a day.
-there are driving restrctions here because pollution is bad. Depending on the last number of your license plate you can´t drive a certain
day of the week.
-people don´t wear helmets, biking or when riding motorcycles (and sometimes they cram a whole family on a motorcycle with mom, dad, and 2 kids....crazy). When someone is wearing a helmet, its usually a flimsy helmet, and the strap isn´t fastened.
-gas for stoves and water is sold by trucks who drive around on the street blaring advertisements for them, or they come to your door.
Well, I´m just about finished here. I finished the blanket to give to my Mexican family and am almost ready to go home. I feel like my spanish has improved somewhat, especially comprehension and listening skills, although I need more practice talking (it´s hard when you´ve surrounded by 30 American students a lot of the time). Anyways, hope you all enjoyed the updates, and I´ll see many of you soon in California! Hasta luego,
Mon
