For those of you who know me, you'll know that all I need to do to sleep is to stop talking and close my eyes, sitting, lying down or standing up it doesnt usually matter which, I'm good for a snooze tired or not. That was until our first night bus from Oaxaca to San Cristobal de las Casas. Where speeds of about a quarter of a mile an hour over speed bumps to save the suspension are a must-around death defying corners, over cliff edges, in the pitch black, with trucks coming towards you and only a little metal bar to stop your fall, apparently speed need not be a factor! And to think we were called crazy gringos the same day for not giving a tip to a dodgy old man who was barely playing a trumpet while we tried to eat our lunch, my tip to him now would be dont ever go to San Cristobal on a bus! My only hope for a wee sleep came thanks to a flimsy sleep mask, a senisible and calm Tom(although his reasoning was we're on the bus now theres not much we can do if we're gonna die, we're gonna
die! At this point Tom feels the need to point out that there was a point in the journey when we decided to overtake a car and two lorries on a pretty slim and windy road, only to see the headlights of an oncoming truck!!! Excuse my french but my thoughts at the time were precisely...Oh shit! Ok so he seemed calm at the time but now that he is adding his parts it may just have been for my benefit), Rachies bedtime mix on my MP3, a highly suspicious and potentally illegal smell as well as lots of prayer. Suffered to tell the tale though so it cant be all bad, Amy I am really not sure I still agree that 'getting there is half the fun', trying to embrace it though. So after 2 hours of panic back to sleep as per most of the other 6, 500 miles so far (Tom is getting used to keeping himself entertained on journeys).
Other news from the last few days, which of course includes food, I have completed my eating a local delacasey task, with a wee grasshopper from Oaxaca. Smelt bad, tasted worse but I managed it and Tom
didnt so there is always a silver lining (Tom wants me to point out that he had been ill for the day previous to this, didnt manage to eat anything for a whole 24 hours which you all know takes some doing for Tom...sounds like a lame excuse if you ask me though!) We also found every chippers must have, Dad and Caleb you would love it, a potato on a stick-amazing, and yes for all you celebrity juice fans that was a potato comment. Ate in a place called fat cats last night which was amazing again our amazing going off how cheap Tom's beer was, 2.30 for 1.2 litres of Corona-not bad.
Tom and I are still getting used to life with each other 24/7 and for the most part its great, theres the odd thing we may need to iron out, like the fact Tom likes to wait till I'm almost ready to go out for the day before he starts getting ready himself, then pretty much does EVERYTHING in slow motion in his usual laid back way. Good job we've got almost a year to get around these places cos Tom's going nowhere in a hurry.
Sumidero canyon
Amazing, photos dont do it justice Or theres the fact that I drop or loose something about three times a day, aswell as my accident pronness not getting any better this side of the world. I seem to stub my toe or bang my head more than once every day and even resorted to walking straight into a metal box on a wall this week, gave myself a nice big bump on my forehead-much to Tom's amusement, even though I was crying it gave him a chuckle which of course didnt go down so well. Now that its gone I can see the funny side just not sure it was ever as funny as Tom thought it was (he kept calling me a cling on from star trek). Good times!
We've been to see a few more Mayan ruins (looking forward to chitchen Itza but think we may be done after that!) lots more churches, a huge tree-biggest in the world apparently, 58 metres round! Mezcal factory-worse than tequilla and not good on an empty stomach and today's trip was to Sumerido Canyon, a 2 hour boat trip through a huge and very beautiful canyon (tom says its like the ones off lord of the rings).
We even got to see our first proper beasties..about 10 crocodiles, we went up pretty close as well which made me a little nervous but made the pics better. Off to a few waterfalls on Saturday on our way to Palenque and then a week of beaches which I'm looking forward to alot!!
