THURSDAY (1-24-13) Ok, so here is the story, last night we decided to change of our plans. We have decided to head somewhere that is out of the mountains and closer to the coast. We loved San Cristobal, but the city sits at 6,000 feet. That translates to warm days and chilly nights. After several chilly nights (low 50s or high 40s) we decided it was time to adjust our plans. So we are not going south to Comitan. I got out the book, did some reading and figured out how to get us to the coast. So the question became, is it the northwest coast or the southern part of the coast? Glad to descend back to the coast out of the 2000m weather in San Cristobal. Puerto Arista may sound to you like a port, but the best part of it is the bird rich estuary that backs onto the camping/cabañas. I stayed at Amazonia Camping Cabañas which is 200m west from the Lonely Planet trailed Jose Camping Cabañas. However, even with some assistance on directions, my taxi driver only managed to find the former. Jose rents the one canoe for exploring the bird sanctuary and also has a functioning restaurant, unlike Amazonia. I enjoyed my early moring canoe so much I rented the canoe late afternoon as well.
