Our first port call in Greenland was Nuuk, the capital. Formerly named Godthåb, the city is the largest town in Greenland with a population of about 18,000. Nuuk is also the world's northernmost capital city, just below the Arctic Circle. The city is spread out and the landscape quite austere looking. Inussuk, sculpture by Niels Motfeldt. The sculpture memorializes the inauguration of Greenland's self governance in 2009. The three pillars refer to the three peoples of Greenland, north west and east. The stones were collected from the shores of Greenland. DSC_0455

Modern Nuuk. Nuuk Center (NC) rises above traditional one story red wooden housing. Opened in 2012, Nuuk Center comprises a two-level shipping mass and an eight floor office tower. It is the largest and tallest building in Greenland. DSC_0450

Katuaq - Nuuk cultural centre. Opened in 1997. "Inspired by Greenland’s dramatic scenery of icebergs, snowfields and mountains, the main element of the building is sheathed by a ‘floating’, undulating screen of golden larch wood. ... The screen acts as an architectural metaphor for the Northern Lights, whereas the dark and massive form of the main building is reminiscent of the icy mountains of Greenland.". Designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen of Denmark. DSC_0458

Katuaq - Nuuk cultural centre. Opened in 1997. The round form in the foyer houses the multi-purpose auditorium. "The Greenlandic artist Buuti Pedersen has created the relief based on the old myth of the sun and the moon called Malina & Aningaaq. The relief is carved directly into the wall". IMG_0406
