An unexpected surprise today. Originally we had a nine hour boat trip planned to Eqi glacier. A different glacier 100km or so north of Ilulissat. The front of the glacier in Ilulissat is invisible on account of all the icebergs in front of it. Eqi calves into an open bay so the face of the glacier is visible. Unfortunately the boat had broken down the previous day, stranding that day’s passengers so nine hours of boat ride were avoided and swapped with a Sikorsky helicopter ride to the same glacier. The inside of the helicopter was like an airplane and except for the noise it was remarkably smooth and steady. Eqi is truly remote. (There are no roads between towns in Greenland.) This trip wasn’t on the tourist menu (but it should be). 25 minute flight ... read more

Sunday started with a gentle trek outside of town to the old village of Semirmiut. There is nothing there now except for a couple of turf huts, which were typical Inuit accommodation prior to European settlement. But as you come over the crest there a icebergs as far as the eye can see. The cliff at the end of the walk was where older Inuit women would throw themselves to their death to reduce their drain on the village. Donna stayed away from the edge. Back to the start of the hike (which was only 1.3km each way) was an old cemetery. Most of the graves were from the 1900’s; only a few from this century. Lots of little graves of day old children. Lots of faded plastic flowers. Burial practices are a little unique in ... read more

We spend the morning walking around central Reykjavik in the rain. It is really just a big village; maybe 200,000 people live in the metropolitan area but the inner city/down town area is tiny and very walk able. More on Iceland later when we return after 3 days in Ilulissat. We have a 12.45 flight to Greenland, which departs from the domestic (little) airport, which is literally on the edge of the CBD. Maybe a five minute bus trip? Possibly the most disorganized airport in the world! Arriving in Ilulissat mid-afternoon and the clouds clear for the first time since Oslo over a week ago. The plane is flying over the Ilulissat ice fjord – 100km of icebergs discharged from a huge glacier, that get trapped at the mouth of the fjord for years because it ... read more

We went on a boat. It was late. I played on my Ipod and slept. It was fun. I went on a helicopter that was little. I sat in the front. It was cool. We went to a fish factory. We put on funny clothes. We saw lots of shrimp. It was cool - Sofia Journal Entry Aug 6-7 So many pictures and cool stuff we did in those 4 days in Ilulissat that I had to make 2 blogs about it. We saw part of a soccer game. It was a championship game. We did not need tickets, we just sat down and watched. The field was dirt, not grass. I liked watching. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ That night, we went on an "evening iceberg" tour. The boat left really late, about 900pm. The sun was still up. ... read more

We went to a cliff where there was icebergs and played. We went on a hike. We saw a lot of dogs. I bought a stuffed animal dog. We gave it flowers on the hike. We saw icebergs. It was fun - Sofia Journal Entry Aug 4&5 _____________________________________________________________________________________________ After 2 great days in Iceland, it was time to go to my 50th country/territory - Greenland. Daddy said that not many people travel there and not too many people even live there. He had told me that Greenland had a lot of ice and Iceland had a lot of green, ... read more

This is my final entry on Greenland, and we have kept the best for the end. The aim of this trip was to go dogsledging in Greenland, an adventure in itself. Ilulissat have 4,500 inhabitants, and 3,500 dogs, most of them, if not all of them are linked to dogsledging. Walk around Ilulissat little town, and you see dogs everywhere, some have a leash, some are rooming freely in the street. For this expedition, we chosed the 3 days, 2 nights trip. That was Hugues and I, our two greenlandic guides, and a total of 32 dogs for our 2 sledges. You can do 2 hours, 3 hours, 5 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 4 and 10 days trip. 4 days would have been great, but a little over our budget...Greenland is not a cheap place! ... read more

Our flight from Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat took 45 minutes, but was three hours late. It actually seems normal to have flight delays here due to weather conditions, but we made it! We stay a total of 3 nights in Ilulissat. The city is the third biggest city by population in Greenland, with a total of 4,500 inhabitants, and 3,500 dogs! We are way up north, but weather is actually a little warmer in Ilulissat than in Kangerlussuaq as we are right on the sea here. We are staying at the Icefiord Hotel. It is a cute little 3 stars place just on Disko Bay. Amazing views from our room, wow, I love to see those icebergs right out of our window. The locals still call end of March winter, but the sun rise at 5am and ... read more
