Next year we will practise havoc, In that green trench. The saws will yammer their nagging dirge, The donkeys will gather the corpses, The land will be hammered to stumps and ruin... Peter Trower, The Ridge Trees. Despite living in a treeless domain, I actually, somewhat like the trees and their branches that diminish the forever-wind and present us with squirrels. The southern tip of Greenlan... Read Full Entry

Eric the Red finds a Greenland -- happenstance-- if you believe in that sort of thing.
The polar regions call to you and we love reading your blogs. We've been to both Iceland and Greenland so this was a bit of a trip down memory lane and yet you always offer something new for us to think about. Oh the wonder of the world. We will actually be back in Iceland in less than a week.... sorry our paths didn't cross. I wonder what it would be like to sit in a zodiac, in the quiet and appreciate the wild life that is surrounding you.I'm certain my heart would have been pounding. I can't imagine the wonder of seeing a pod of a hundred whales. I've seen whales in the San Juan Islands off of Washington and in Antarctica....but 100....wow. I can't imagine. I'm not up on my fin whales so just did some research. As you can imagine this generally happens when reading one of your blogs. And 80 bowhead whales...wow...if I couldn't have my life I would want to live yours. A polar bear.... and a music festival.... wow. It just does not get any better. What a trip. I believe things happen for a reason and you are guided and make decisions based on what you need to learn and experience. Once again thanks for sharing your experiences. MJ

Washing Machines
Hey Dave, awesome entry as always... but I was hoping to find a picture of you with the Christmas lights and now I REALLY want to see the washing machines! I'm not a bird nerd, just a regular one! Safe travels my friend. :)

Whale city
I had goosebumps reading about your whale encounter in the zodiacs! We had our first whale encounter in Sri Lanka earlier this year (blue whales) and I think I'm now a bit hooked on seeing more species. I love your use of the term Happenstance, a very apt word that describes so many chance circumstances that make happy travel memories. Great blog and fabulous photos :)

Goosebumps
I still have goosebumps. My bi-polar career has be bouncing around cold areas and I happenstance upon many whales - I am totally hooked on them. I am with you when you say you want more! Blue whales in Sri Lanka sounds awesome. Thanks for the comments.
