Peggy's Cove
Therese relaxes at the rocky cove As it turns out, there is not much sleep to be had on the St. John's airport floor. Especially when it's cold, and you're dressed for summer and your sleeping bags are packed away. We still managed to squeeze in an hour or two, Therese a little more than Eric. When we got up, the airport was beginning to get lively again. We got our boarding passes, and went to check in. The bikes were too big for regular baggage check, so we had to go to the over-sized baggage check (and also pay an extra $50 each). When there, they told us that their over-sized baggage scanner didn't fit our bikes either, and we needed to unpack them from the boxes we spent so long packing up and taping up the night before. When we asked for tape to re-tape them, they said that wasn't their job. We still had a bit left, luckily not packed away. We were also able to get a small roll from our airline (a short walk away from the baggage check people). We managed, but it wasn't a nice experience.
When finally done, we went to a restaurant claiming to have a
Deep in Thought
Eric contemplates life at the cove breakfast buffet that opened at 5:00 am, but by 5:15 they were still not open, and didn't seem close to done set up, so we gave up. We had some snacks at a bakery - a bagel and a croissant, and then waited to board the plane. The ride was short and easy, and we gained a half hour too. Therese spent the whole time sleeping on Eric.
Arriving in Halifax, we quickly found Shira at the airport, got our bikes, took them out of their boxes, and loaded them onto the car. We headed to town, had breakfast, and went back to Shira's hotel. We grabbed an hour or so of sleep there, took a dip in the hot tub, and had some much needed showers. When all clean, we made contact with Eric's friend Phil from blokus, and headed out to meet him.
Phil took us to a nice little Irish pub for lunch (The Old Triangle) that had really good food, and when done we headed down to the waterfront. We walked around, checked out the harbour, and saw some of the buskers doing some early routines - the official busker fest didn't start until
The Lighthouse
Eric, Shira, and the famous lighthouse later that evening, but the festivities were already underway, and some of the buskers wanted to get a head start. The four of us (E, T, Shira and Phil) headed over to the Alexander Keith's Brewery for the tour. Shira went back to her hotel for a short rest having already done the tour a couple of days before, but the three of us had a really great time, and some good beer on the lively walk. When done we headed back to the boardwalk to see some more buskers now that the festival was officially underway.
After enjoying some of the acts, with Phil even taking part in one, we met up with Shira again. Before long we had to leave to meet Rachel and Nick at a restaurant, and had to part with Phil who was heading home for dinner. Of course, we snuck in a little Blokus on the docks. We went to "The Bicycle Thief" for dinner - a fitting name given our trip, and a very upscale place. We enjoyed a lovely dinner, and by the time it was over, we were ready for bed. We saw off Rachel and Nick, and Shira as
Some Perspective
Eric surrounded by all the rock well (after getting a quick ride from her), checked into the Dalhousie residences and promptly fell asleep.
The next morning, we met Shira early, had a quick breakfast, and took the scenic drive to Peggy's Cove. We spent a while walking around, enjoying the scenery and climbing over the rocks. We took lots of pictures. After it was done, we headed back to the docks to see more busker action! We met up with Rachel and Nick, and had a nice afternoon enjoying some of the best acts the world has to offer. We really liked Alakazam, the Australian Contortionist; Flameoz, the Australian circus and fire show, but most of all, Victor Rubilar, the Argentinian soccer ball juggler and comedian who holds 4 Guiness World Records. Rachel and Nick departed part way through the afternoon to make dinner at their apartment, and when we were done, we joined them for home made lasagna - not only was the dish home made, they even made the pasta themselves. We had a nice evening, and then back to the residences for one last night in Halifax.
Saturday morning we got up early, had buffet breakfast at Shira's hotel, and hit
The Boat
There is a picture of Eric and Rachel in this same boat from twenty years ago the road early. We spent most of the day driving, and ended in St. John, New Brunswick. We made it in time to check out the "reversing falls" at high tide. This bay of Fundy attraction wasn't really falls, but had very quick tides, and some great views. When done we had one last East coast seafood dinner at the highly recommended, and good but ultimately overpriced Billy's, and called it a day at our hotel.
Sunday morning saw our last bit of tourism. We headed to Saint Andrews thinking of taking a whale watching tour. The morning was thick with fog, and we decided against the tour, but we still got to see some sea-floor at low tide. We also got to drive across Bar road to Minister's island. Bar road is barely a road, and is right on the sea floor. It can be used at low tide, but once the tide comes in, the road is covered with water and is unusable. We took a quick trip around the island, headed back across the bridge, and started driving. We then began our bee-line for home. We drove for the rest of the day, gaining an hour
A Pint
Eric gets a pint of Keith's on the tour at Quebec, and using it for more driving. We finally finished just past Levis, Quebec, had dinner, and called it an early night. Tomorrow, we will attempt to make it all the way home. One last post, and that's all folks.
Pictures are coming, but now it's bed time. Goodnight.
