Day 21. 7952Km. Happy Summer!
I can't say enough about Satellite Radio. I have Sirius. I can't imagine a trip like this without it. I suppose I'd listen to my iPod but even that would get old fast. Any channel any time. LOVE IT!
The government spin doctors are at it up here. There is a Northern Roads Program in effect and everywhere there is road construction there are signs plastered up all over. The thing is, other than one patch of resurfaced road, all I've seen are bridge repairs that would have had to be done anyway. I imagine some political propaganda announcement where they promised the people of the North that the government was going to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into northern roads and everyone cheered.
My friend Caroline came from Quebec to Toronto about eight years ago. She made the comment about the way the people dress in Ontario. When I was in Montreal I noticed the women were fit and well dressed. I kept track in my mind as I passed through the province. When I crossed into New Brunswick the first stop I made WAS at a roadside burger stand so maybe it was

just like Quebec not the best example but lets just say things got dumpy. I talked to a guy from Winnipeg in Halifax. He asked me what I thought of the women in Quebec? He said the women in Calgary carry themselves in much the same way. Two weeks later I get on the ferry crossing the St. Lawrence and the first thing that catches my eye are the thin attractive women. Maybe there is something to it or maybe Caroline has be under her delusion. One thing IS for sure. There are bicycle paths along many highways in Quebec. They are well marked and from what I saw they are used.
OK. I think my random thoughts are done. Well, the ones I can share.
I did'nt get on the road till a bit after 11 this morning. Not good since I knew I wanted to cover over 700Km for the third day in a row but I was tired and did'nt get out of bed till after 9:30. I think I filled up in Kapuskasing and started across the top of Superior. For some reason I never though of it being as remote as crossing the top of Quebec. Probably because
there are more towns marked on the map. The road is better and is busier. I stopped in Longlac for a few groceries and because my eyes did'nt want to focus any longer. There was a Subway in the general store/gas station so I had a half a sub to give me a boost. I should have gotten fuel here too but figured I'd stop in Beardmore when the tank was closer to empty. Beardmore does'nt have a gas station. Either does Rockey Bay and Macdiarmid only has gas. Oh oh. A few more klicks and the low fuel light comes on. A few more klicks I stop at a rest stop and empty my can into the tank. I'm back up just above a quarter but the terrain is getting hilly. On the map I notice there is an OPP station in Nipigon. If worst comes to worst I will ask them if I can drop the trailer there and try to make it to Thunder Bay. The gauge is below a quarter again. I don't even know if I could make the 100+ kilometres to Thunder Bay without the trailer now. CAA will bring me some fuel if
a Bear!
my first glimpse of wildlife I run out but how much? I don't know how fast that last eighth goes cause I never let it get that low. You just DON'T run a diesel out of fuel! (Murray!)
tick tock... tick tock... A sign tells me there is a Huskey truck stop in Nipigon. WHEW!
That was dumb. Why did'nt I give this road the same respect I did the Northern roads in Quebec? Because it was'nt foreign? Because there were more dots on the map? Lesson learned.
