Beautiful Tremblant
This is the view at the top of one of the runs. Spectacular! Hi all, greetings from Collingwood.
Hope you are all well and behaving yourselves. And of course staying cool- the weather has been a bit intensely hot from what I hear. Hope you have those fans out and in good use!
We are glad to report that we think our bad luck is finally behind us and we had a successful trip to Mont Tremblant in Montréal, Quebec at the beginning of the month. Well that is after we had our car repaired when it didn’t start- the night before we were due to head to Toronto to meet up with Cathy and Adrian and join Cathys school ski trip. Anyway after that we got the car towed and repaired and made our way to Toronto (or T.O. as the locals say!) we caught the bus early Thursday morning with 46 high school students and made the 7 hour journey into French land! I got to practice a bit of French too so that was pretty cool! It definitely was different skiing here. Blue mountain is but a mere hill compared to the likes of Tremblant. There is a green run which is 6km long among others and by the
Moguls and Trees!
Ah! Not a good combination- I did this several times on the way down! bottom my legs were absolutely killing! At least there was an enclosed gondola to get back up to the summit- a ride taking 9 mins of pure indoor luxury. We had a ski lesson on the Friday morning with all the school kids then went off and explored the 94 runs there were to offer. Unfortunately my skiing level wasn’t as good as I would have liked- I had purchased myself some second hand skis and boots which I had to get used to, therefore limiting me to somewhat easier runs, but it was still beautiful skiing none the less. Mark’s skiing was awesome and he was doing some black runs, so he was happy. Our nights at Tremblant were generally spent drinking beer with Cathy and Adrian and the other cool teacher Heather.
Saturday morning Adrian, Mark, Heather and myself headed out to catch the first runs of the day. It was absolutely beautiful- the sun was out, it wasn’t too cold (considering it had been -26 the week before, and that was just in the car park!) and the scenery was to die for. After warming up on a few green runs the four of us thought
The village
We had to have a photo in the giant chair in the village at Tremblant. Not as good we know as the giant pineabpple, banana...... we should move onto something a bit more challenging- but I think we got a bit carried away! We skied over to a choice of 2 blue runs- one had a sign saying moguls- and we instantly all said no to that one. The other run had a picture of a tree next to it, and we thought, ok, that should be alright. Unfortunately for us and our limited skiing knowledge we didn’t realize that runs with trees weren’t groomed- oopps… so this run had both trees AND moguls in addition to being blue. It was actually quite fun however and the beauty of it was that it was really easy to get up when one fell over (which I managed quite often- see picture!). Heather, Mark and I were having a great time going down this run, however we could hear calls from behind (in between a lot of falling) saying “who’s f**king idea was this!!” coming from Adrian! About three quarters of the way down he was so exasperated he took off his skis and walked the rest of the way and when he got to the bottom he declared it was “time for a coffee”! We were
Village view
This was the view from our "condo" at Tremblant... it definately was tough! trying not to laugh too hard! When we picked him up after his coffee he could see the lighter side luckily and we didn’t go down that run again!
We got a great deal skiing at Tremblant with Cathy’s school- awesome accommodation in the village (with a king sized bed- they are enormous!) and because the resort is also Inrawest like Blue Mountain not only did we get a deal through Cathy but we also got staff discounts on rentals and ski tickets- not bad eh?
Since then we have been working hard and enjoying life in Collingwood. The night before Valentines day we had dinner at the “Beaver & Bulldod” (half Canadian have English) sports bar. It was 50c wing night (we are such povs!) and they even had Australian flavored wings- they were delicious!
We have also tried a truly Canadian drink- a “Caesar”. I ‘m sorry to say it’s not to our liking and when I tell you the ingredients I’m sure you’ll understand why! It’s a shot of vodka, splash of Worcestershire and Tabasco (I thought they only belonged on food, but anyway…), Clamato juice (what the- Clam and Tomato juice mixed together-
Water tower
Every town we have visited in Ontario so far has their own water tower. This is ours and we live right near it! What the water in the tower is used for we don\'t know! Clam juice????) and a celery salt rim. They often also come with a piece of celery or spicy bean in the drink. Hmmmmm- disgusting! I have to make them all the time at the bar- I don’t know how people drink them!
Yesterday we visited a local brewery (yes, totally up Marks alley!) with the crazy guy that I work with at the bar, Paul and his girlfriend, Steph. It’s in a little town near here called Creemore, and makes delicious beer. We did the tour of the brewery and had some free samples of course, before going next door to the pub and consuming more Creemore whilst having a massive pub lunch. It was a great day and good to hang out with some people our own age! Next weekend we are going to the staff Curling night with them and hopefully we’ll do some snowshoeing with them also as they have never done either!
Today we hit the ski slopes at Collingwood again, and it was a balmy 1 degree- which brought a lot of people out unfortunately, but it was still good skiing and I am improving every day- I might nearly be ready for
Collingwood terminals
These are featured in a lot of local photography we have seen so we thought we better take some of our own! a black run soon!
Well that brings us to the end of another entry. We hope everyone is well and getting excited for Sally and Trav’s upcoming wedding- nearly a month away! We are thinking of you all and missing our Hawthorn life! Leave us some comments- we love getting them. Stay cool, until next time,
Susie and Mark xoxo
