Peering out our cabin window at 6:30 a.m., I saw we were off Cape Spear, Newfoundland, with its flashing lighthouse. It had taken Caribbean Princess two days to sail down from Nanortalik, Greenland, to reach St. Johns's. "The most conspicuous building in St. John's is the Roman Catholic Cathedral (St. John the Baptist), which occupies a commanding site on the summit of the hill on which the city is built. Colonial Building. "Built between 1847 and 1850 by James Purcell, the Colonial Building was the seat of the province’s and colony’s government for over 100 years.". "On the Military Road, running along the crest of the ridge, stands the Colonial Building or House of Parliament, containing chambers for the two branches of the Legislature. It is 110 ft. long and 85 ft. wide, and was built in 1847 at a total cost of 100,000£. Its Ionic portico is borne by six massive columns 30 ft. high".--Baedeker 1907. Hi, Dave, Thank you for your comments on my St. John's photos and for adding those two to the Churches thread! I had looked at the Photography Forum before, but noted many of the threads are locked. Birds, Trains, among others, are locked. Is there any way of reviving these?.
