Leaving Ontario
Finally some sunshine!Brrrrr.....Hi all! Leaving Ontario we finally saw the sun, but we had to pay for it dearly with sub-zero temperatures! We had our end of day celebration in a small town east of Winnipeg called Ste. Anne. After the celebration we headed into Winnipeg. Our hotel was right downtown on Portage very close to Main. The following two days were non-relay days. We reluctantly ventured outdoors to do some maintenance jobs and some accessability research for our Global Accessability Map.
www.rickhansenglobalaccessibilitymap.comThe temps were -30 degrees before the windchill! After the two days the relay started back up again in Ste. Anne bringing the Medal to the Forks in Winnipeg. Still very cold! Rick is back with us. It is great to have him on the road with us again! We had great entertainment at our End of Day Celebration at the Forks Market. The next day, we relayed from Winnipeg to Headingley, a small suburb of Winnipeg. Temps were up a little, but still -30 with the windchill! Headingley were so excited to have us. They went all out on decorations and food! Later that evening we all went out to The Kings Head Pub. We were sadly bidding farewell to
Bryn, our photographer. He got a job in London for the Olympics so had to end his contract early. We also said goodbye again to Joey our endurance participant. We are sure he will join up with us again at some point. Sunday was a complete day off. Hank and I went for a nice dinner at Moxy's. Sundays temps went up to -7 degrees so it was easy to leave the hotel! On Tuesday, we were scheduled for some more GAM'ing. We decided to check out the Manitoba Museum. They had a circus exhibit which we thoroughly enjoyed! The pics tell it all! We later went for lunch at an Ethiopian restaurant. They had a vegetarian buffet. I was in heaven because this was Day 17 of vegetarianism for me! Later that evening we went night skiing at a golf course. It was a beautiful evening with -7 degrees temps. Jan. 25th we had our new endurance athelete, Lonnie Bissonnette, join the team. This was an event day. We did a school presentation in the morning. The students loved Lonnie's story. He is a BASE jumper and during his 1100th jump (from a bridge) he attempted some crazy quadrouple
Winnipeg
Coming into downtown move and didn't open his parachute on time. He hit the shallow water at 100 kph. He broke many bones and sustained a spinal cord injury leaving hime a parapalygic. This was 7 years ago and he has now jumped over 50 times again! If anyone is not familiar with BASE it stands for Bridge, Antenna, Structure and Earth. Later that day, some of the team volunteered to cook dinner at the Ronald McDonald House. This is always a great event! This was our last day in Winnipeg. Time to continue westward!
