Have now made it part way up the Stewart-Cassiar Highway on my way to the Yukon. Today I made it to the town of Stewart, which is absolutely stunning (probably helped by the gorgeous weather). After leaving Skagway, we weaved back through parts of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory to get to the Cassiar Highway. The Cassiar is a shorter route back to the Lower 48 than the Alaska Highway; and we wanted to visit parts of southern British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California before headed to points southeast. We did make one more day trip back into Alaska at Hyder, where we expected to watch bears fishing for salmon from a famous viewing platform run by the National Park Service. We parked the coaches at a lovely lakeside Provincial Park at Meziadin Junction, BC and took the car across the border at Stewart, BC, into Hyder, AK, where there was NO U.S. Customs station. (There WAS a Canadian one coming back out.) So, don’t forget your passports! Well, our ... read more
