Lake Louise campground When:Canada Day weekend 29th June - 3rd July 2012
Where: Calgary to Vancouver and a little in between
Highlights: Lake Louise Canada Day, Yoho NP & the drive into BC
Mileage: ~1200 km
Friday, June 29th We leave early in the morning and make a peaceful and relaxing drive to Lake Louise 2.5 hours away. Lake Louise campground is one of its kind in Canada. It is in prime bear(grizzly) country and hence is protected by an electric fence that gives the campers a feeling of security. We have not tested the extent of electricity in the fence for obvious reasons and can only hope that the bear or any other animal does not get close enough to get a shock!
We set up camp and relax biking around!
Saturday, June 30th Yoho National Park We had only passed by
Yoho National Park and have heard so much about the area. We took the short 20 min drive into Yoho. Our first stop was
Takakaw Falls There were slight showers and the waters of the Yoho river were a beautiful emerald.
We stopped by Spiral Tunnels(an
architecture feat that reduces the grade of the railroad) hoping to find some trains going into the tunnel. No luck!
Sunday, July 1st Canada Day! We headed locally to enjoy July 1st celebrations.
With a bouncy house, fire engine and a live magic show and some free popcorn, it was a relaxing day!
Monday, July 2nd Off to Kamloops We wind down and head W into
British Columbia!
Driving through mostly known territory, we ended up in Kamloops, the biggest city for the day.
Kamloops is in the middle of a desert which was surprising in BC. It is hard to think of a desert in BC. Little did we know!
Tuesday, July 3rd Kamloops to Vancouver
A long day's driving brought us close to Vancouver. Mostly overcast the road winded along Fraser river. BC was in the middle of a heavy flood and all the rivers were heavily swollen. We witnessed it in Golden, BC and also near Hell's Gate Tramway(Fraser river). Hell's Gate is a typical tourist attraction, but we still stopped
by.
For the interested, Fraser River is one of the most amazing rivers. It is the longest river in BC. Read more
here.
It is an experience to cross the Fraser in a cable car.
We reach Vancouver in the evening and I was shocked to see a huge city in 4 days! As irony would have it, we drove via Hastings st and instantly saddened and shocked by all the homeless people. Its going to be quite an event calling this place home for the next 2 months!!!
Summer in Vancouver! Sounds like a dream come true.
The familiar Pacific! The similar Kelp! The infamous cold water.
There should be more to Vancouver than this. I shall soon discover.
Disclaimer: Blog from 2 summers ago. This would be the first of the 5 blogs in Vancouver. Next blog: Vancouver.
